Only a few days prior to his death, the once-celebrated violinist and composer Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf (1739-99) summed up his eventful life and did so with a bitter undertone: »I now have resided for almost two years in Bohemia at the Rothlhotta Castle of Baron Stillfried [Červená Lhota in today’s Czech Republic]. Although I have free upkeep for myself and my family, I am nevertheless in every respect simply a beggar. […] I will assume, since I certainly know that my name and my works are famous throughout Europe, that I have brought pleasure to half a million people in this populous region of the world. Now if each one of these persons were to throw (!!) one little penny to me, or better put, to my family – for it is no longer of use to me – what […] considerable support it would be for the abandoned, miserable family of a man, who, like the one in the Gospel, did not bury his talent!«

Perhaps Mozart sings more, but Haydn speaks, he chatters, he rejoices and talks about the really important things in life”. After Matthias Kirschnereit’s exploration with the Radio Hesse Symphony Orchestra of the middle ground between the Classical and Romantic eras in works by Hummel, Weber and Mendelssohn, the pianist now turns to Haydn. And that means he is entering the terrain, somewhat neglected even now, of the great Austrian’s piano concertos. All nine keyboard concertos that were definitely written by Haydn are now being released with Matthias Kirschnereit and the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra of Heilbronn, which he directs from the instrument. Included is the Double Concerto in F major with Lena Neudauer on the violin. As a “chamber music treat”, Matthias Kirschnereit also had the Piano Trio in G major arranged and recorded. The recording is a co-production with Deutschlandfunk Kultur.

The friendship between Mátyás Seiber and Antal Doráti dates back to their youth, when they were the two youngest students in Zoltán Kodály’s composition class in Budapest in the 1920s. Doráti was one year younger than Seiber and held him in high esteem from the beginning. In the memoirs, Így láttuk Kodályt [‘Thus We Saw Kodály’], he writes the following: “The two ‘best’ were Mátyás Seiber and Lajos Bárdos. Matyi [Mátyás] wrote a great string quartet at the time, which has survived. One of our tasks was to write variations on a Handel theme. In response to one of Seiber’s slow-tempo variations, Mr Kodály said: ‘That’s nice’. In our eyes – at least in my eyes – that was the canonization of Matyi”.
