Soul Jazz Records’ new ‘Life Between Islands’ collection is inspired by the launch of Tate Britain’s exhibition of the same name, exploring the links between Caribbean and British art and culture from the 1950s to now. The album focuses on the most important Black British musical styles to emerge out of the distinctly Caribbean world of sound systems, featuring an all-star line-up including Dennis Bovell, Shut Up and Dance, Cymande, Digital Mystikz, Brown Sugar, Funk Masters, Janet Kay, Ragga Twins – a lightning-rod journey across Roots Reggae, Jungle/Drum & Bass, Jazz-Funk, Lovers Rock, Jazz and Dubstep. Many of the tracks represent how Black British artists defined their own identity, such as Brown Sugar’s righteous ‘Black Pride’ and Tabby Cat Kelly’s powerful ‘Don’t Call Us Immigrants’. Aside from being musically rooted in the distinctly Jamaican-born phenomenon of the sound system, much of this identity is also shaped by the triangular relationship of being British-born, of Caribbean heritage, and with an equal love of African-American Jazz, Funk and Soul, as evidenced with many Lovers Rock reggae covers of American soul tunes. This stateside influence can also be heard in groups such as the Funk Masters whose jazz-funk music successfully crossed over into New York’s clubland, and the great Cymande, whose unique street-funk became staple material for numerous US hip-hop artists. In the early 1990s, jungle and drum & bass artists took the essence of reggae’s soundsystem culture – MCs, dubplates, crews – and applied them to their own music, combining heavy reggae bass lines with intense double-speed drum breakbeats. At the new movement’s forefront were Shut Up and Dance, working closely with The Ragga Twins. In the early 2000s, dubstep, spearheaded by Digital Mystikz, became the latest instalment in this ever-evolving soundsystem culture. This collection shows how these many styles were interconnected.

Depuis 1968, le label allemand fondé par Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer est une véritable caverne d’Ali-Baba pour les amateurs de jazz dignes de ce nom. Une écurie aussi active dans la sphère du jazz rock (alors en pleine ébullition à l’époque de la naissance du label) que dans le swing, le free, le hard bop voire l’ethno jazz ! Comme ceux réunis sur Welcome to the Black Forest (The Sounds of MPS) le prouvent, MPS a attiré des très grands noms : les pianistes Oscar Peterson, Mary Lou Williams, Monty Alexander, Bill Evans (ici dans une fascinante composition lyrique dont les cordes sont arrangées par Claus Ogerman) et Malakoff Kowalski, les guitaristes Joe Pass, Jim Hall (bouleversant Young One for Debra extrait d’un live à Berlin) et Robben Ford, les saxophonistes Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson et « l’autre » Bill Evans, le claviériste George Duke (un smooth et funky Capricorn), les trompettistes Freddie Hubbard et Don Ellis (à la tête de son big band 5 étoiles pour une version ultra-cuivrée et psychédélique de Whiplash), le violoniste Stéphane Grappelli, le vibraphoniste Dave Pike (direction l’Inde avec Mathar !), le clarinettiste Rolf Kühn ou les chanteuses Malia, China Moses et surtout Ella Fitzgerald (étonnante reprise en live du Sunshine of Your Love du groupe Cream !). Mais si MPS signifie Musik Produktion Schwarzwald, c’est aussi Most Perfect Sound ! Et à l’écoute des vingt titres de cette compilation, la qualité de la prise de son saute aux oreilles.

Legendary singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen died on November 7, 2016, one day before the 2016 Presidential Election, but the world didn’t find out for several days after. On January 24, 2017 (shortly after the inauguration of Donald Trump and the succeeding Women’s March), New York City finally paid tribute to the Poet Prince of Montréal with a concert featuring dozens of singers, songwriters and musicians, including Richard Thompson, Josh Ritter, Will Sheff (Okkervil River), Amy Helm, Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith Group), Elvis Perkins, Holly Miranda, Joan As Police Woman, Delicate Steve, and many more. It was an evening the Village Voice called “a loving, thoughtful tribute to Cohen’s life in music and poetry.” The live album features highlight performances from this nearly three-hour marathon concert, which the Voice also hailed as a “carefully constructed, expertly structured production.”

Under the Radar is proud to announce Covers of Covers, which is the magazine’s first ever album. In honor of our 20th anniversary we approached some of our favorite musicians and asked them to cover any song by any artist who had been on the front or back cover of our print issue over the years. Yoko Ono’s catalog isn’t easy to navigate or even define at times. Even when John Lennon was on board as a collaborator – band member, producer or cheerleader – her music could be willfully difficult and stubbornly uncommercial. She’s a singular artist, maybe more so than her late husband and his famous band, which makes any tribute to her vast recorded work an uphill charge not exactly suited for the easily intimidated. The 14 brave souls who tackle Ono’s music on Ocean Child: Songs of Yoko Ono can’t truly replicate her distinctive path, and much of the source material hinges on her artist’s right to explore those paths via routes of her choosing. In other words, they’re not songs in the traditional sense. There have been some interpretable tracks over the years: “Who Has Seen the Wind?,” “Listen, the Snow Is Falling” and “Walking on Thin Ice” are close enough to pop music.
