Bossa nova is a relaxed style of samba developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is mainly characterized by a “different beat” that altered the harmonies with the introduction of unconventional chords and an innovative syncopation of traditional samba from a single rhythmic division. Mountain Stage is a two-hour, live music performance radio show staged with a theater audience, produced by West Virginia Public Broadcasting, and distributed by NPR.
Mountain Stage debuted in December 1983 at the Culture Center Theater in Charleston, West Virginia. Since then, we’ve produced well over 1,000 shows at our home and as far away as Glasgow, Scotland and Fairbanks, Alaska. The venues have ranged from The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. to a portable stage in the woods of Pocahontas County, WV.
We are a team sport. Many of the folks who work with us have done so for more than 30 years and most have been here at least 20. Like a family, we’ve seen births and deaths, marriages and divorces, triumphs and tragedies. Stagehands, merch sellers, engineers, band members and producers have all contributed to the growth and evolution of the
show as have audience members, listeners, donors, and underwriters.

Few artists have been as influential in multiple music industry roles and reached across genre as smoothly as the charming Chet Atkins, the original C.G.P. (Certified Guitar Player). This CD is a hot-picking homage to this legendary, almost instrument-defining legend, performed by the A-list of pickers and voices including Vince Gill, Tommy Emmanuel (CGP), Eric Clapton, Brad Paisley, Jerry Douglas, Ricky Skaggs, James Taylor, Alison Krauss, Charlie McCoy, Michael Cleveland, Bryan Sutton, Ashley Campbell, Brent Mason, Guthrie Trapp, Sierra Hull , and vocalist Bradley Walker. SOMM Recordings honours Franz Schmidt, one of the great symphonic composers of the 20th century, on the 150th anniversary of his birth with this double-disc set featuring two of his masterworks. Revered in his day in his native Austria as the nation’s leading composer and an elite teacher, cellist and pianist, his name will not be known to many. This is due, at least in part, to a perceived association with the Third Reich (against which there is ample evidence). This first release on CD of two premiere recordings, meticulously produced and restored by Lani Spahr, showcases Schmidt’s unique harmonic language, exceptional contrapuntal skill and mastery of form, qualities which prompted Hans Pfitzner to call Schmidt’s Symphony No. 4 “nearer perfection than Bruckner, more honest than Richard Strauss and more original than Reger”.

We are honored to partner with Alice Randall and a community of Black, female musicians to bring you My Black Country – The Songs of Alice Randall. Alice Randall has written songs performed by Glen Campbell, Moe Bandy, Marie Osmond, Jo-El Sonier, Judy Rodman, Radney Foster, Holly Dunn, and Trisha Yearwood. She is the first Black woman to have a number-one hit on the country charts. Her influence in country music and as a voice in the Black community is immense. Here we present a collection of Alice’s songs re-imagined and re-recorded by Black female artists from around America.
