Since 1822 the Royal Academy of Music has inspired generations of musicians to connect, collaborate and create. This recording of Bach Partitas continues this mission, reuniting renowned harpsichordist and conductor Trevor Pinnock with students from the Royal Academy of Music and The Glenn Gould School of The Royal Conservatory in Toronto. Following the success of Goldberg Variations (arr. for small orchestra by Józef Koffler), the Principal of the Academy, Jonathan Freeman-Attwood commissioned ‘re-imaginings’ of three of Bach’s most celebrated keyboard Partitas for the same scoring, by alumnus composer Thomas Oehler. The creative challenge – to bring a fresh perspective to some of Bach’s most elegant resourceful and refined keyboard writing – pays off in the hands of wonderfully talented musicians, and reveals how Oehler’s faithful response to Bach’s score allows the music to glow as brightly as ever.

One of the most striking features of Rameau’s only collection of ensemble chamber music is that it seems less a tantalising essay in what French chamber music might have yielded – had Rameau not sought the bright lights of opera – than a singularly inspired genre of musical images whose significance resides almost exclusively in its own inimitable terms. The magical elusiveness of these works, so deliberately enigmatic, encourages us to ponder the significance of titles such as ‘Le Vézinet’ (as it happens, a forested suburb of Paris with a pleasure garden). We may hear a glistening carrousel but Rameau’s aqueous imagery reflects unending shards of light to ravish our senses.

Alison Balsom, The English Concert, Trevor Pinnock – Sound the Trumpet: Royal Music of Purcell and Handel (2012)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 01:06:19 minutes | 1,15 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Warner Classics
In the year of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee, Alison Balsom celebrates the heroic era of the Baroque trumpet in works by George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) and Henry Purcell (1658 or 1659-1695), whose anthems, odes, sinfonias and operas have provided the music for numerous royal celebrations from their own day to the present.
Joining forces with Trevor Pinnock, harpsichordist, conductor and pioneer of historical performance, and with the English Concert orchestra that he founded, Balsom demonstrates the versatility and expressive power of her valve-less instrument in original works and new arrangements. These include Purcell’s Sound the trumpet and Handel’s Eternal Source of light divine in duet with countertenor Iestyn Davies and Purcell’s The Plaint from The Fairy Queen in duet with soprano Lucy Crowe. Further repertoire includes suites from Purcell’s semi-operas King Arthur (1691) and The Fairy Queen (1692) in new arrangements by Balsom and Pinnock, Handel’s Water Piece in D Major HWV 341 and his Oboe Concerto No. 1 in B-flat Major HWV 301 transposed into C Major.
Alison Balsom is one of today’s most popular classical musicians. Having managed to break through to the mainstream without abandoning her musical integrity, she continues to draw ever-wider audiences for her performances and recordings of diverse repertoire.
