Tim Ray with Terri Lyne Carrington & John Patitucci – Excursions and Adventures (2020)

For a lot of jazz fans, the interest in this album will lie more with the side players than the leader, and fair enough. Tim Ray is a talented and accomplished pianist, but because much of his career has been spent playing behind pop artists—Lyle Lovett, most notably, but also Aretha Franklin, Bonnie Raitt and Jane Siberry—his name is less likely to ring bells than the names of drummer Teri Lynne Carrington or bassist John Patitucci. And to be honest, listening to Carrington and Patitucci mix it up on tracks like the angular, funky “Messiaen’s Gumbo” is one of this album’s greater pleasures.

In 1962, Duke Ellington, Charlie Mingus and Max Roach created one of the pivotal jazz recordings of the 1960s. Money Jungle provided commentary on the perennial tug-of-war between art and commerce. GRAMMY Award-winning drummer, composer and bandleader Terri Lyne Carrington, Gerald Clayton and Christian McBride pay homage to Duke, his trio and his creative vision with a cover of this historic recording. Carrington also enlists guest artists to help with the rearrangements and reinterpretations. These musicians include: Clark Terry, Robin Eubanks, Tia Fuller, Antonio Hart, Nir Felder, Arturo Stabile, Shea Rose and Lizz Wright. Also included are two Carrington originals, “Grass Roots” and “No Boxes (Nor Words),” along with “Cut Off,” a delicate piece written by Clayton. Money Jungle: Provocative In Blue brings fresh light and energy to this jazz classic.

Carrington’s very first session, TLC & Friends features an epic and enviable lineup of collaborators, including Kenny Barron on piano, George Coleman on saxophone, and Buster Williams on bass. Her father Sonny Carrington also contributes saxophone to the Sonny Rollins classic “Sonnymoon for Two.” The album masterfully showcases Carrington’s artistry as a drummer and composer, highlighted by the standout original track “La Bonita,” a refreshing interpretation of Billy Joel’s beloved composition, “Just The Way You Are,” alongside scorching renditions of standards like “Seven Steps To Heaven,” and “What Is This Thing Called Love.

For the 2018 opening celebration of the Berklee Institute for Jazz and Gender Justice, Teri Lyne Carrington asked her students to select and perform songs from the famed jazz Real Book – a compilation of lead sheets or scores of jazz standards – written by women composers. When she released there was only one in the entire book, Carrington, a Grammy Award winning virtuoso jazz drummer, composer, inter-disciplinary artist, activist and educator, who has worked tirelessly over the last decade to advocate for inclusivity and raise the voice of women, trans and non-binary people in jazz, set out to shift the narrative.

The longest track on “Perfection,” the debut album by a jazz trio with David Murray on tenor saxophone and bass clarinet, Geri Allen on piano and Terri Lyne Carrington on drums, clocks in at just over eight minutes, covering so much ground that it feels almost like an epic. Composed by Mr. Murray, it’s a swinging tune with a pensive yet intrepid melody, and a midsection of bristling abstraction. The title is playfully apt: “The David, Geri & Terri Show.” Dynamic combustion is the core characteristic of this all-star trio, which first convened at the 2015 NYC Winter Jazzfest. Mr. Murray, 61, is an improviser of great, garrulous bluster, while Ms. Allen and Ms. Carrington, both in their 50s, have forged prominent careers more in line with the postbop mainstream.
