29 July 2020 marks the 50th anniversary Sir John Barbirolli’s passing. He died at the age of 70, having been born in 1899 in London to parents of Italian and French origin.
A great British conductor notable for the warmth and generosity of his interpretations, and for his attention to detail, Barbirolli is especially closely associated with Manchester’s Hallé Orchestra, of which he became Permanent Conductor in 1943. He transformed the Hallé’s fortunes and remained closely associated with the orchestra for 27 years.
Barbirolli began his career as a cellist, going on to establish himself as a conductor in the UK in his twenties. He received his first contract with the New York Philharmonic as early as 1927 and went on to become Arturo Toscanini’s successor at the orchestra, remaining with it for seven seasons (1936-1943).

「英雄の生涯」は最晩年である1969年9月にロンドン響とは最後の収録となった曲で、LPの初出はバルビローリが亡くなってから3ヵ月後のことでした。ゆったりとしたテンポと濃厚なまでの表現は他に追随を許さない個性的な演奏で50分を超えますが、まったく弛緩しない指揮は見事です。今回の復刻ではハレ管との「ばらの騎士」の「ワルツ・シークェンス(バルビローリ編)」をカップリング。2曲とも世界初SACD化音源です。本国のオリジナル・アナログ・マスターテープから192kHz/24bitでデジタル化したマスターを用いてSACD層、CD層別々にマスタリングを行いました。新規解説付。永久保存盤です。
亡くなる約1年前の収録である1969年の唯一の「英雄の生涯」は、名盤が多いロンドン交響楽団との最後のセッション録音にもなりました。両者の結びつきは長く、この収録時の模様は解説書にある藤野氏の記述(コンマスであるジョン・ジョージアディスの回想)が興味深いですが、この録音は充実した響きとスケール感で他の演奏を大きく引き離します。しばしばR.シュトラウス作品の演奏時に見られるような外面的な効果は微塵も感じられない、極めて充実度の高い演奏ではないでしょうか。オケの力量も十分で、録音も揃った名盤です。尚、今回のカップリングはバルビローリ自身の編曲である「ばらの騎士」からワルツ・シークェンスとしました。12分ほどの中に、曲の素晴らしいエッセンスが詰まっている演奏で、この曲を聴いただけでもバルビローリの非凡さが十分にわかります。生き生きとした音楽の流れとシュトラウスの醍醐味が十全に堪能できる名演です。
今回、本国にあるオリジナルの2Chのアナログ・マスターテープから、192kHz/24bitでデジタル化を行ったフラットマスターを使用し最新でマスタリングを行っています。マスターは総じて整ったバランスであり、経年変化も少ない状態でした。「英雄の生涯」の充実した響きには驚かされます。制作にあたっては極力オリジナルのバランスを重視し、音楽的な観点でのマスタリングを心掛けました。それにより楽器の距離感や奥行きなど見通しが良くなり、さらに定位が向上したことでストレスなく最上の演奏をお楽しみいただけます。尚、解説書には英国音楽に造詣の深い、藤野竣介氏による新規文章を掲載しました。

2020年はベートーヴェンの生誕250年という記念の年ということもあり、バルビローリが残した重要な録音である「英雄」を外す訳には行きません。英国ではレーベル側の方針もあって、通常のコンサートレパートリーでありながらも、元来ドイツものを英国の指揮者が収録する機会はそれほど多くはありませんでした。バルビローリも例に漏れず、ベートーヴェンの交響曲はモノラル音源を入れて5曲のみです。今回はステレオで収録された第1番、第3番、第8番の3曲と、「レオノーレ序曲第3番」を2枚に集成しました(他にステレオでは「皇帝」もあり)。尚、BBC交響楽団との録音は少ないので「英雄」は貴重です。この音源はバルビローリの数ある録音の中でも隠れた人気があり、CD時代では復刻が遅れましたが再発された際は大いに話題になりました。曲本来の持つ重厚さを引き立てた稀に見る充実した「英雄」です。今回の復刻では加えて、最晩年の1969年の録音であるハレ管弦楽団とのパーセルとバッハの小品2曲も収録しています。特にパーセルの「組曲」は、ニューヨーク・フィル時代に元々の弦楽合奏の編曲から、木管とホルンを入れた編曲を自ら行っている版でのもので、モノラル時代の1956年にも同じくバルビローリの編曲でPYEに録音していました。バルビローリが気にいっていた作品です。

1964年録音の名演「グレート」と、オペラ指揮者時代のレパートリーでもあった得意のウェーバーの「オベロン」序曲をカップリング。悠然としたテンポながらも端正で構築力に優れたこの「グレート」は、数ある同曲録音に中でも白眉です。未だにファンの多いこれらの録音を、今回、現況での最高音質を目指して、あらたに本国のオリジナル・アナログ・マスターテープから192kHz/24bitでデジタル化をおこなったマスターを用いてSACD層、CD層別々にマスタリングを行いました。藤野俊介氏による新規解説付。永久保存盤です。
「グレート」は生涯で2回録音しており、この復刻ではステレオ収録である後の1964年の方を採用しています。独墺圏の指揮者のテンポよりゆったりとした流れで進みながらも、端正な構築はたいへん魅力的です。バルビローリらしい濃厚な演奏のなかにロマン的な表情を見せる仕立ては独自のもので、第4楽章の推進力も見事です。この盤もCD化が遅い状況でしたが、日本では再評価が進んでいます。長年互いを知っているハレ管弦楽団(音楽監督:1943-58)ということもあり、細部にまでこだわる丁寧な指揮は好感度が高いです。当時としては出色の出来ではないでしょうか。カップリング曲は元来オペラ指揮者であるバルビローリらしい演奏で、小品にも心が宿る、充実したものです。

これらの曲の代表的名盤が遂に高音質で復刻!エルガーをレパートリーの中核に置いていたバルビローリが残した旧EMIレーベルの至高の演奏です。「威風堂々」以外は複数ある録音のうちの最後の録音であり、エルガーの音楽の真実を、一段と深くまで聴くことができる名盤です。「エニグマ」と「コケイン」のオリジナル・アルバムに、バルビローリの唯一の録音である「威風堂々」第1-5番を加えました。音質的にも従来以上の解像度とダイナミックレンジの広さを十分堪能できます。今回の復刻のために、本国のオリジナル・マスターから96kHz/24bitでデジタル化したマスターを用い、SACD層、CD層別々にマスタリングを新規で行いました。永久保存盤です。
バルビローリはエルガーの元で実際に演奏したことや非常に親密であったこともあり、生涯にわたってエルガーを演奏、各地で紹介し続けました。亡くなる5日前にも交響曲第1番を演奏しており(音源あり)、今回収録の「エニグマ」は計3回も録音を行うなど、特別な感情を抱いていたことがわかります。3回目の録音となったこの1962年の盤は、当時主にハレ管弦楽団と英PYEレーベルに録音を行っていたバルビローリのEMI復帰第2作目のなったアルバムで、当時W.レッグによって運営されていたフィルハーモニア管弦楽団と収録されました。尚、当時のEMIは優秀な録音が多く、今聴いても非常に良いプレゼンスで再現可能なものが多い状況です。「エニグマ」以後、同じ8月に「コケイン」と「威風堂々」の第1&4番が収録され、「威風堂々」の残り3曲は4年後に別途ビショップ&パーカーのコンビで録音されました。そのため、これら3曲のみ音の傾向が異なりますが(オケもニュー・フィルハーモニア管)、今回の新規復刻ではその差がはっきり判別できると思います。共感と思い入れの深さからくるこのバルビローリが残した音は、現代においても最上のエルガー演奏に数えられます。「エニグマ」は特にLP時代からファンが多く、CD以降はリマスターされる機会は必ずしも多くありませんでしたが、ここに至り、ようやく最高音質でこの名演を味わうことができることになります。

マーラーと並んでバルビローリのレパートリーの中核を成していた、晩年の旧EMIレーベルへのハレ管とのシベリウス録音を5枚に集成。一部の曲は世界初SACD化。最晩年にかけてのバルビローリ&ハレ管を代表する音源であり、すべてのシベリウス録音の中でも圧倒的な存在感を誇る名盤が2018年復刻盤として蘇ります。BOXのジャケット写真と収納されている各盤は英初出のオリジナル・ジャケット・デザインを採用。
今回の復刻のために、本国のオリジナル・マスターから96kHz/24bitでデジタル化したマスターを用い、SACD層、CD層別々にマスタリングを新規で行いました。永久保存盤です。バルビローリのシベリウス録音はモノラル時代から多くあり、交響曲第2番に関しては現況でライヴを入れて5つの音源が存在するなど、得意としていたことがわかります。英国や北欧圏では早くからシベリウスの音楽が理解され、DECCAのアンソニー・.コリンズ盤や、エールリンク盤の交響曲全集がモノラル時代は定盤でした。バルビローリは1966年の第2番からこのステレオでの全集の録音を開始し、亡くなる約2月前の第6番まで、約4年強かけて全集を完成させ(交響曲全集としてはこの録音が唯一)、一躍シベリウス録音のスタンダードとして広く評価されることになりました。諸井誠氏が「バルビローリ盤をシベリウス演奏の基本とみなす」旨書いたのは良く知られていますが、後の本国の指揮者による多くの録音が存在している2018年現在においても、シベリウス演奏のひとつの究極の姿として支持され続けています。まさに高音質で復刻するに相応しい音源です。(1/2)

John Barbirolli studied cello as a boy, making his debut public appearance at the age of 12. He received a formal education at Trinity College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music, from which he graduated in 1916. Upon graduation, he found a position in the Queen’s Hall Orchestra, becoming its youngest member. He made his professional solo debut as a cellist in Aeolian Hall, London, in 1917. During World War I he joined the British Army; while in the service he got his first taste of conducting by leading an all-volunteer orchestra. After his service ended in 1919, he returned to the Queen’s Hall Orchestra. He also resumed performances as a cello soloist, appearing with the Bournemouth Municipal Orchestra. He joined and toured with the International String Quartet beginning in 1923.

Though exceptionally not recorded with the Hallé but with the Sinfonia of London, this is probably one of the most famous albums conducted under the baton of Sir John Barbirolli. Entirely devoted to English music for string orchestra, it includes very famous tunes such as Vaughan Williams’s Fantasy on Greensleeves or (yet another) recording of Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro, the work Barbirolli recorded the most throughout his career. For this piece, he is partnered by the Allegri String Quartet, the oldest British chamber ensemble still in activity. As a bonus, the digital premiere of Elgar’s Elegy recorded with the Hallé completes that beautiful program.

Born in London of Italian-French parents, Sir John Barbirolli (1899-1970) trained as a cellist and played in theatre and caf’e orchestras before joining the Queen’s Hall Orchestra under Sir Henry Wood in 1916. His conducting career began with the formation of his own orchestra in 1924, and between 1926 and 1933 he was active as an opera conductor at Covent Garden and elsewhere. Orchestral appointments followed: the Scottish Orchestra (1933-36), the New York Philharmonic (1936-42), the Hall’e Orchestra (1943-70) and the Houston Symphony (1961-67). Barbirolli guest conducted many of the world’s leading orchestras and was especially admired as an interpreter of the music of Mahler, Sibelius, Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Delius, Puccini and Verdi. He made many outstanding recordings, including the complete Brahms and Sibelius symphonies, as well as operas by Verdi and Puccini and much English repertoire.
