Cyril Meir Scott is one of a group of British composers to have benefitted from three cultural features of recent decades: increased curiosity from performers and listeners; a more inclusive outlook from musicologists and critics; and the music industry spotting a gap and a demand. A much more colourful picture of British music in the first half of the twentieth century has resulted. Scott was a prolific writer of fiction and non-fiction as well as a composer of several hundred pieces. His writings and music are deeply invested in mysticism and the occult. This element in Scott’s work, as Sarah Collins has noted, helps us to see beyond received notions of Scott as either a trivial exoticist or an unjustly-neglected pioneer, and to appreciate his music on its own terms.

This CD brings together three prolific but little-known British composers: Dorothy Howell (1898-1982), Pamela Harrison (1915-90), and Madeleine Dring (1923-77). Working in the same country at the same time, these composers had much in common. All studied at either the Royal Academy or Royal College of Music, and went on to have dual careers as composer-performers. They wrote tonal music in a style that would fall out of fashion in the later twentieth century, which has certainly contributed to their disappearance from concert halls. And above all, they composed with a great sense of humour. The music on this disc sparkles with wit and energy. In the mid-twentieth century the two piano combination was popular both in the concert hall and for light entertainment. It proved a perfect medium for composers who liked to bring a lightness of touch to their work, allowing them to write pieces that were fun both to play and to watch.

“Saint-Saëns Duos for Harmonium and Piano, is performed by award-winning acclaimed classical Accordionist Miloš Milivojević and Pianist Simon Callaghan. The rise in popularity of the harmonium in the second half of the nineteenth century brought with it a large repertoire of chamber music, especially in France, where the instrument had been developed and refined. The combination of harmonium with piano was an especially popular one. The accordion, taking the role of the harmonium on these recordings, produces sound in a near identical way. It is the performers’ hope that the subtle shift from the 19th century French harmonium to a modern classical accordion will enable these delightful pieces to be performed more often and to gain the widest possible audience. Following his studies in Serbia, award-winning accordionist Miloš Milivojević was awarded a full scholarship from the Royal Academy of Music where he became the first accordionist ever to win the RAM Club Prize open to all instrumentalists and was the winner of the prestigious Derek Butler London Prize at the Wigmore Hall. Miloš has premiered many works and has performed at many venues and festivals across the UK and around the world. He has appeared with orchestras and opera companies and is a member of the London Tango Quintet, Kosmos Ensemble, Accord Duo and the Balkan group Paprika. He regularly performs with guitarist Craig Ogden and violinists David Juritz and Lizzie Ball and his playing is featured on the award-winning Bollywood movie ‘Barfi’. He has performed tango live in front of millions on the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing TV programme. Miloš was awarded an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music ARAM for his contribution to music. Steinway Artist Simon Callaghan performs internationally as a soloist and chamber musician, in parallel with his highly successful career as a recording artist. Callaghan’s repertoire includes over fifty concertos, highlights of the standard solo and chamber works of the 19th and 20th centuries, and much that is rare and unexplored, one cornerstone of his work is his commitment to British music. His reputation and experience in chamber music led to his accepting the role of Director of Music at London’s celebrated Conway Hall, curating one of the longest-running series of its kind in Europe. Volume Four in the series of works by Saint-Saëns.”
