Sibelius’s 2nd Symphony of 1902 represents a big step forward in his development as a symphonist. The presence of Tchaikovsky in the 1st symphony has receded, and the big themes, though present, are not so much big statements, but thematic fragments driven by harmonic tensions through which the composer takes the listener on an eventful journey. The tensions are resolved in the opening movements trumpet -capped brass chorale and the finale’s exhilarating hymn-like assurance of the bracing “big tune”.

Joe Hisaishi, Japans einflussreichster Komponist für Film und klassische Musik, veröffentlicht A Symphonic Celebration, sein Debüt bei Deutsche Grammophon. Hisaishis Klangschöpfungen wurden zum Synonym für die erfolgreichen Animefilme des oscargekrönten Regisseurs, Animators und Studio-Ghibli-Gründers Hayao Miyazaki. The four great concertos on this new album span the years 1785 – 1791, Mozart’s last year. The range of emotions these works convey is extraordinary. No.20 in D minor left the audience at the premiere reeling. It is terse, angry and full of passion.
The C major concerto No.21, in contrast, is sunny, bright and full of optimism. No.23 in A major is bathed in a feeling of warm contentment. The wistful and heartfelt Adagio is especially striking.
No.27 in B flat of 1791 is an autumnal work of intense sadness, almost as if the composer sensed his life was coming to an end.

Christopher Gunning returns with recordings of his Violin Concerto, Cello Concerto and Birdflight.
Not composed until 2011, Gunning’s Violin Concerto was composed after inspiration whilst the composer was out hiking in Wales. The violin is supposed to represent ducking and weaving, rather like the insects and animals found in the Welsh hills and valleys. However, despite this positive venture for the composer, the emotions of sadness and melancholy are never far from this music – feelings which never seem far from Gunning’s music.

This is his first studio album in six years since his second album of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto (2017) and his first recording with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Music Director Vasily Petrenko. In addition to the two violin concertos, it features Bruch’s Adagio appassionato, written for Joachim, and Vieuxtemps’ Yankee Doodle Variations (Memories of America). The recording was made at the Watford Coliseum with Henry Woodhall, creator of many masterpieces, and producer Christopher Alder, who has won ten Grammys and made many best-selling albums.
