Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Thomas Beecham – Thomas Beecham Conducts Richard Strauss (1995/2023)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 01:21:15 minutes | 458 MB | Genre: Classical

SOMM Recordings is delighted to announce the first release on disc of three works by Richard Strauss conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra captured live in London’s Royal Festival Hall. In a meeting of kindred spirits and musical minds, Beecham and Strauss enjoyed a long and mutually admiring relationship over nearly four decades. Thomas Beecham Conducts Richard Strauss follows SOMM’s acclaimed Thomas Beecham Conducts Sibelius and again features recordings newly restored and remastered by Lani Spahr. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1946 by Beecham to inject new energy and new ideas into British orchestral life. A decade later, this disc shows them at their finest. Completely new to the catalogue is the six-part Suite taken from Strauss’s incidental music to Le bourgeois gentilhomme, the erotic ‘Dance of the Seven Veils’ from Salome, and the only known recording of Beecham conducting MacBeth. Completing the disc are two signature tone poems, Don Juan and Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks, recorded live in early 1955 and newly re-mastered from an earlier SOMM release (SOMM-BEECHAM 31). The disc has been curated by Jon Tolansky, who provides insightful and authoritative booklet notes. MusicWeb International hailed Thomas Beecham Conducts Sibelius (ARIADNE 5013) as “a major addition to [Beecham’s] discography” and “a most important release”. Audiophile Audition’s five-star review declared it “heartily recommended”, while BBC Music Magazine described it as “a blazing performance”. SOMM’s ground-breaking The Beecham Collection spans 24 volumes, many of them with the RPO. It includes the partnership’s coupling of Sibelius’s Fourth and Sixth Symphonies (SOMM-BEECHAM 18) and their earliest known recordings, dating from 1946, featuring Wagner, Mendelssohn, Mozart’s Symphony No.40 and Schumann’s Piano Concerto with Moura Lympany the soloist (SOMM-BEECHAM 19).

This album, reflecting the love affair Pinchas Zukerman has had with English music since the late 1960s, contains the most beloved violin pieces by Edward Elgar and Ralph Vaughan Williams, the towering figures of the English musical renaissance. Salut d’amour was immensely popular from the beginning but made Elgar virtually no money. The Lark Ascending had to wait until after Vaughan Williams’s death to become renowned throughout the English-speaking world.

Concertante orchestral works for more than one keyboard instrument saw a revival after the First World War with the neo-Baroque trends of the time helping to revitalize the neglected concerto grosso genre. Recorded here in a new version with three pianos, Martin’s Petite symphonie concertante reflects the dark tensions of the Second World War, while Poulenc’s delightful Concerto for Two Pianos is infused with the spirit of Mozart in its rich and eclectic stylistic tapestry. Shostakovich’s Concertino, in a new orchestral version, shifts between superficial Soviet entertainment and heartfelt expressiveness, and the songs quoted in Aryeh Levanon’s Land of Four Languages symbolize a hope for peace and harmony in Israel.

The shimmering harmonic palette and the vigorously phrased lyricism of these two works respond almost instinctively to each other and make them a natural coupling.

The Cambridge Singers, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra & John Rutter – I Sing of a Maiden: 5 New Carols by John Rutter (2021)

John Rutter’s glorious stream of Christmas miniatures has made him, for many, an essential ingredient in the festive season. The composer and conductor wrote what is probably his most popular piece, “Shepherd’s Pipe Carol,” while still an 18-year-old undergraduate at Cambridge—and he has never looked back. “Once I started writing carols, somehow it seemed difficult to stop,” Rutter tells Apple Music. “I’ve been doing it ever since.” Realizing that he had a “backlog” of them led him to I Sing of a Maiden, an EP of five new pieces recorded in July 2021. “I’m asked, ‘Do you still enjoy Christmas?’ And actually, I sincerely do,” says Rutter. “Christmas carols are a resilient form of art—folk art, as I’ve often suggested—that have attracted some extraordinarily fine composers. They were adding their little tile to a centuries-old mosaic of devotion, praise, joy, prayer, and celebration. It all makes up that extraordinary season of the year that we call Christmas.”

This album is a late recording by the legendary Thomas Beecham. Much like some of his contemporaries (such as John Barbirolli), Beecham enjoyed composing witty pastiches and transcribing the old masters. In particular, the Beecham-Handel suites after excerpts from operas and instrumental music remain very famous. In 1928, Serge Diaghilev commissioned Beecham to produce music for his ravishing ballet The Gods Go A’Begging after Handel, and whose choreography designed by Balanchine was inspired by 18th-century pastorales. Here is the version conducted by the composer himself, remastered from the original tapes and made available for the first time on digital platforms.
