Pierre-Laurent Aimard – Schubert: Ländler (2024)

Star pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard presents Ländler, a collection of charming dances by Franz Schubert. These rustic and cheerful miniatures reveal a fascinating side of Schubert’s musical personality. Their simplicity is deceptive, for these dances are often shaken by Schubert’s harmonically wandering soul, yet remain lyrical, picturesque and melodic. For Aimard, there is a kinship between Schubert’s Ländler and Kurtág’s Játékok, pieces he often performs side by side and which share a combination of playfulness and modernism that is also reminiscent of the great 20th century miniaturist Anton Webern. Avoiding almost any repetition, Aimard is more reminiscent of a sleepwalker’s journey than a series of dances.

Irresistible and insurmontable challenge. After his acclaimed interpretation of Messiaen’s Catalogue d’oiseaux, pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard records Beethoven’s Hammerklavier Sonata and “Eroica” Variations. The Hammerklavier Sonata is one of the pinnacles of Beethoven’s creative output, and arguably one of the highest mountains to climb for any pianist. To Aimard, it poses one of the most frightening tests of a performer’s life, but one that is as irresistible as it is insurmountable. The dazzling “Eroica” Variations are nicknamed after Beethoven’s iconoclastic Third Symphony, and employ the melody he would later use as the main theme of the symphony’s finale. Beethoven’s fondness for this melody is evident, as he also used it in his ballet music for The Creatures of Prometheus, as well as in the seventh of his 12 Contredanses.

[a] brilliant pianist — one of those daunting Frenchmen clearly born with three brains . . . the C major prelude starts us off, the notes light and limpid, the graceful pace ebbing when Bach’s harmonies veer from the straight and narrow . . . Aimard has clearly thought deeply about the collections’s kaleidoscopic structure . . . The F sharp minor fugue is a mysterious wonder, as if the music were feeling its way in the dark; the G major prelude sparkles with gaiety . . . –Geoff Brown, The Times

On Etudes & Frames, pianist Tamara Stefanovich presents the music of contemporary master Vassos Nicolaou. In his etudes, Nicolaou uses virtuosity as a means to explore forms consisting of complex rhythms, great speed, and multi-layered sound. Each of the fifteen etudes has a meaningful title and focuses on specific geometric choreographic movements of the hands on the keyboard as well as a basic acoustic idea. For Stefanovich, this set has a structural integrity not seen since Ligeti’s etudes. Nicolaou’s etudes are paired with Frames for two pianos, in which Stefanovich is accompanied by Pierre-Laurent Aimard. Stefanovich studied with Nicolaou and has been a major proponent of his music ever since. Dedicating an entire album to his music is a dream come true.

Once again Pierre-Laurent Aimard demonstrates that he is not only one of the most technically gifted pianists around today, he is also one of the most intelligent. Musical intellect shines through every bar in this account of “The Art of Fugue”, as Aimard eschews any sense of wallowing for a speedy, alert traversal of the score. It sounds so natural that it is something of a surprise at the end to realise how affecting it all is . . . This is Bach-playing to listen to every day, fresh, spry and well modulated . . . Perhaps no pianist since Charles Rosen has so persuasively demonstrated that this contrapuntal encyclopedia is to be heard as well as read. –Peter Quantrill, Gramophone
