The talented young French clarinetist Pierre Génisson, a graduate of the Paris Conservatoire, has chosen to devote his first solo recording – on the Aparté label – to music that, as he puts it, “is part of [his] DNA”. To a programme of French music, therefore, with works by Claude Debussy, Ernest Chausson, Camille Saint-Saëns, Jean Françaix, Francis Poulenc and Jules Massenet: pieces of rare sensitivity and emotion, written for clarinet and piano, all of them composed, in close collaboration with professors of the Paris Conservatoire, for the exit examinations of that institution. The compositions span some hundred and fifty years.

Pierre Génisson is fascinated by the elegance and the great refinement of this music.

Clarinetist Pierre Génisson’s new album features many elective affinities. Pierre Génisson and the Quartet 212, made up of musicians from the Met Opera, gather around the quintets of Mozart and Weber, related by Wolfi and Constance’s wedding. Those two radiant scores, where the warm and voluptuous timbre of the clarinet melts in the brightness of the strings, frame their passionate dialogue in a sophisticated blend that the album’s title, How I met Mozart, updates mischievously.

For his new record, Pierre Genisson honors the legacy of the one known as the ‘King of Swing’ and his worldwide successes: Benny Goodman. Both composer and conductor, born in Chicago, Illinois, the clarinetist shared his musical life between jazz and classical music: He was the first to perform jazz music with black musicians in the famous Carnegie Hall in 1938. Though we know most of his jazz standards, he also contributed a lot to the development of the classic clarinet repertoire: for instance he distinguished himself performing Aaron Copland’s Concerto, Bernstein’s Prelude, Fugue and Riffs or Bartók’s Contrasts.

Bringing together these emblematic works with unforgettable hits like Sweat Georgia Brown or the irresistible Sing, sing, sing, Pierre Genisson makes Benny Goodman’s star shine brighter and proves once again, alongside with the brilliant musicians of the BBC Concert Orchestra, all the extent of his talent.

For his first album as an exclusive Erato artist, the French clarinettist Pierre Génisson focuses on his instrument’s most inspired 18th century advocate: Mozart. The centrepiece of his programme is the composer’s sublime clarinet concerto. “The spiritual and symbolic scope of this concerto is immense,” says Génisson. “Every time I come back to this masterwork, I experience the same thrill as when I discover a piece for the first time … Mozart and the clarinet – what a special combination!” Génisson is established as one of today’s leading French wind instrumentalists. A multi-faceted soloist, and a frequent guest with orchestras around the world, he trained in Paris at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique and in Los Angeles at the University of Southern California. His repertoire ranges from Mozart to jazz by way of folk music, and his lively interest in new music has led to collaborations with a number of prominent composers. Collaborating on this album with the period instruments of Concerto Köln and conductor Jakob Lehmann, Génisson plays period clarinets, copies of instruments from Mozart’s time, and modern clarinets specially crafted for the recording. The programme complements the sublime concerto with a number of shorter pieces. In two arias from La clemenza di Tito Génisson partners mezzo-soprano Karine Deshayes, but his clarinet also ‘sings’ the vocal lines in arrangements of numbers from Così fan tutte and Le nozze di Figaro. Rounding out the album is a new arrangement by Bruno Fontaine of the ‘Lacrimosa’ from the Requiem, made for clarinet, organ and Fender Rhodes electric piano.
