This album is about something we all have in common; this beautiful planet Earth that we all call home.
Ben Folds brought new friends to the project, the wonderful composer and orchestrator Jherek Bischoff and bluegrass violin virtuoso and composer Gabe Witcher. They wrote original underscoring for our lyrics to create these new orchestral works. All of these friends together with conductor Steven Reineke and the musicians of the National Symphony Orchestra made this project a reality.

1959 Record with ‘New Orthophonic’ recording. Howard Mitchell, Conductor National Symphony Orchestra So many composers seem to hit their stride with a 5th symphony that is considered outstanding. This is true of Shostakovich. The art work on the front has a very interesting painting by Joseph Hirsch, a well known painter from the 30s and 40s. A close up version of Shostakovich’s face composed of jewel-like facets echoing the artistic complexity of the music.

For the first recording on its own label, the Washington, D.C.-based National Symphony Orchestra turns to two heroes of American music. While in New York at the start of the 20th century, Czech composer Dvořák fell in love with indigenous folk tunes, incorporating them into arguably America’s first symphony. Conductor Gianandrea Noseda revels in its dances and brings a delicious richness to the spiritual-inspired Largo. In the work of Copland—a composer who carved out a more permanent identity for US music—those traditional folk tunes are on the surface. In his 1938 ballet, Billy the Kid, he proves a master at conjuring the open spaces of the American Wild West, bustling street scenes, and gun fights. The NSO is alive to every thrilling moment.
