When listening back to these recordings, I am surprised to discover how many ingredients of my own biographical narrative this album reveals. My fascination for the spirit of free improvisation is clearly present and I can hear many traces of the musical elements that touched me the most in the first decade of my life. In 1967, the year I was born, Miles Davis toured in Europe with his quartet. A few years later his music became more electronic which led the way down a jazz rock road soon to be traveled by Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter with their Iconic band Weather Report. This inspiring episode is expressed in this recording with the inclusion of the synthesizer and with our wilder expressions. A substantial part of my inspiration and musical identity is shaped by these musicians in that first period of my life. In later years elements of classical and contemporary composition, elements of the piano repertoire as well as Indian classical music became part of my range of sound colours. In particular the music that reflects stillness and a sacral ambiance. So much of all this has found a way to emerge in these trio improvisations.

For me, these recordings are a dream come true. They represent the culmination of almost five decades of exploring, playing, performing, contemplating, constructing, deconstructing, searching, researching, reflecting, engaging in conversations, jamming, sense-making, traveling, instructing, sharing, dreaming and being.
For a long time I desired to allow myself full immersion in this genuine kind of improvisational exploration with its invitation to let go of habitual patterns and grooves and to resonate more deeply with the music and her deep generative source; a source that expresses itself in silence and sound so infinitely mysterious.
Recording this music has been an invitation to improvise on a tightrope, letting go of preconceived design and trained artistic conceptualisations and has been a journey to the edge of technique and control with a strong refusal to repeat myself and an keen interest in taking risk and explore unknown territory.

Throughout my long career as a drummer I have felt the urge to place the drumset in a setting in which it would stand out and challenge people to listen to it in a different way. When I found myself in a position to produce my own CD I contacted my long time friend and excellent pianist Marc van Roon: “Do you want to do a CD project together? Just the two of us: Wim and Marc. What do you think?” His answer was clear: ” That’s an inspiring idea!” Although the piano and drums can be featured in a trio setting with a bass, this does not show their full potential. A duo setting, which was common in the old days, allows the instruments to reveal themselves in ways no longer heard today.
