Until the late 1680s, Henry Purcell composed almost exclusively for the royal court. But when the monarchy decided to reduce its expenditure on music in 1690, he joined the United Company, a London theatre company, and devoted himself to composing for its productions. These took varied forms, with operas such as King Arthur (1691), The Fairy Queen (1692) and The Indian Queen (1695) but also spoken plays with music, such as The Virtuous Wife (1695).

The famous Marquise of Pompadour, favorite of King Louis XV for almost 20 years, rules over the arts at court. Rameau, whom she particularly admires, is omnipresent. In particular, he receives a specific commission for the Théâtre des petits appartements where the marquise sings herself in the middle of a troupe mixing amateurs and professionals: Les Surprises de l’Amour, from which the ensemble Les Surprises takes its name. Under the expert direction of Louis-Noël Bestion de Camboulas, he presents here the very first recording of this ballet in its initial version of 1748, with the prologue entitled The Return of Astrée and associates with it another commission for one of the annual trips of the court to Fontainebleau: The Sybarites (1753), ballet act whose main couple is reminiscent of the king himself and his favorite. A high-flying vocal cast resurrects these two works: Marie Perbost, Eugénie Lefebvre, Jehanne Amzal, Clément Debieuvre, David Witczak, Philippe Estèphe.
