Ravel was very happy with his second Violin Sonata, written between 1923 and 1927, whose second movement adopts the Afro-American blues. This wonderful sonata is characterised throughout by the contrast between the consistently fairly dry piano part and the smooth, melodic violin.

The Sonata for Violin and Cello, written between 1920 and 1922, is dedicated to Debussy, who had died in 1918, and the work could be thought of as an elegy for the composer. There are references to Debussy’s final chamber works.

George Templeton Strong was born on April 26, 1856 in New York. His father, a respected lawyer and a passionate music lover, kept a diary, which is one of the fundamental sources for the study of American musical life in the nineteenth century. From an early age, George studied the oboe and tried his hand at composition, which he soon decided to devote himself entirely to. Faced with the resistance of his father, the young man broke with his family and left Europe in 1879 to complete his education. Following the example of young American musicians of his time – such as Chadwick and MacDowell – he went to Germany and worked in Leipzig with Salomon Jadassohn and Joachim Raff. Being a great admirer of Franz Liszt, he presented his symphonic poem Ondine to Liszt, which met with the approval of the master. From 1886 to 1889 Strong lived in Wiesbaden, and in 1891 he was appointed professor of composition in Boston. However, the following year he returned to Europe and settled in La Tour-de-Peilz. For almost ten years he almost completely abandoned the composition to devote himself to painting: being a remarkable landscape painter, he left behind numerous watercolors based on nature.
