These performances come from the first ever complete set of the Mozart symphonies, dating from the 1960s, and they still represent ‘big orchestra’ Mozart at its most congenial. The contrast here between Bohm’s sparkling Mozart, both elegant and vigorous, and the much smoother view taken by Karajan with the same orchestra, works almost entirely in Bohm’s favour. Interpretatively, these are performances very much of their time, with exposition repeats the exception (as in the first movement of No. 40) and with Minuets taken at what now seem lumbering speeds. Yet slow movements flow easily, and finales bounce along infectiously. Consistently they convey the happy ease of Bohm in Mozart, even if the recording is beefy by today’s standards, not as transparent as one now expects in this repertory, whether on modern or period instruments.
There is some inconsistency between the different recordings, all made in the Jesus-Christus Kirche in Berlin between 1959 and 1966. The best sound comes from the sessions in 1966 for the Linz and No. 39 – satisfyingly full with no edginess on violins – and the least good from 1959 for the Prague, where high violins sound rather fizzy. Yet the very precision of the CD transfers encourages one to highlight such points. In practice most collectors will find the sound more than acceptable enough in all six symphonies to convey the warmth of Bohm in Mozart without distraction. Peter Cosse contributes an informative note on Bohm, rightly bringing out his ”natural, unforced approach to Mozart”, but much of the booklet is given over to advertising the other issues in The Originals series. After all, what harm is there in encouraging nostalgia by making the CDs look like vintage LPs and by reproducing the original sleeve designs? –Edward Greenfield, Gramophone

[One] of the best versions of these works we have had in recent years… [O]ne could say that in general Pollini is a shade more open and direct in his projection of the solo part than Perahia, so that there are times when he suggests a greater freshness of feeling… Pollini is robuster in the finales, more overtly brilliant… Comments such as these are inadequate to pin down the qualities of…magnificent artists at the top of their form… –Gramophone
. . –Bertrand Dermoncourt, Classica – Repertoire
Pollini plays with classical poise and clarity, and the accompaniment, from Karl Böhm and the Vienna Philharmonic, is very lively . . . as a Mozartian he was almost faultless. –David Mellor, Mail on Sunday

On his first concerto disc for Deutsche Grammophon and his first devoted to works by Mozart, Maurizio Pollini performs two perennial favourites: the sunny A major work and the lively F major K.459 with its overwhelming fugato finale. The veteran conductor Karl Böhm and sumptuous accompaniments by the Vienna Philharmonic provide the perfect background to Pollini’s immaculate playing.

The lasting fame of conductor Karl Böhm is based on qualities that have been attested to him with great unanimity by listeners, musicians and critics throughout his long professional life: Discipline, rigor and precision in the elaboration of compositions and, at the same time, unpretentious stepping back behind the work and the composer in performance. After several years as a conductor in opera houses, he left administrative duties behind and worked as a celebrated guest, touring, concert, and opera conductor. He was regularly invited to the New York “Met” and the Deutsche Oper Berlin, to the festivals in Salzburg (from 1938) and Bayreuth (from 1962), made guest appearances between Tokyo and Moscow, Milan and Buenos Aires, and last but not least at the radio stations of Berlin, Munich, Cologne, Frankfurt and Stuttgart, which were happy to engage him when there was something important to celebrate.

The Austrian conductor Karl Bhm is one of the towering conductors of the 20th Century. As the embodiment of the long Austro-German musical tradition, he helped to write musical history. This 19-CD set assembles all the extant recordings he conducted for EMI (notably its German Electrola label) over the period 1935 to 1949 in Dresden, Berlin, Vienna and London includes a number of rarities and the world premiere release of a version of Mozart’s Serenata notturna recorded in Vienna in 1947. It was during these years that Bhm cemented his reputation as a major conductor of Austro-German repertoire. Collectors will also be pleased to know that this set contains all the recordings that featured in the now-iconic series of Dresden-themed LP boxes released by EMI to mark Bhm’s 85th birthday in 1979.

This is a very satisfying account of ‘Die Zauberflöte‘, principally on account of Böhm’s handling of the score. He inspires the Berlin Philharmonic to convey a Masonic ‘gravitas’ which is in keeping with the philosophy of Enlightenment Reason which lurks behind the pantomime elements of this unusual work. You will certainly find deliberate speeds here, which may not be to your taste if you like fleet, revisionist, original-instrument Mozart. Vocally it’s the women in this recording that have had a bad press: but Evelyn Lear has some lovely tones in her voice even if there are occasions when Pamina’s music presents her with challenges. If you want perfection in this part, go for Janowitz on the Klemperer recording (but be warned, that has no dialogue). Similarly you may feel that Klemperer’s young Lucia Popp easily outclasses Roberta Peters as Queen of the Night. But Peters still has pin-point accuracy and presents Pamina’s mother as an icy, calculating customer. It’s all a matter of taste.

One of the supreme musical geniuses and most loved composers of all time, Mozart wrote prolifically and excelled in every genre to which he turned his hand. His symphonies are among his greatest achievements, a consummate blend of dazzling invention and tender lyricism. Karl Böhm was one of the first conductors to set down on record his complete Mozart symphony cycle. His emphasis on rhythmic, textural and structural clarity are hallmarks of a Mozart style unaffected by fashion. Now Deutsche Grammophon collects his recordings with the Berliner Philharmoniker of the Mozart Symphonies. The HiRes edition “Karl Böhm – The Symphonies” contains selected symphonies by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms, which the great Austrian conductor recorded between 1959 and 1977 with the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic.

“For many music lovers, this is the most purely beautiful performance of Beethoven’s most purely beautiful symphony ever recorded. The playing of the Vienna Philharmonic is the last word in gorgeousness–the woodwind chords chime with such purity that they practically glow with an inner light. But it’s not a self-indulgent interpretation at all: the storm rages as violently as anyone has a right to expect, and Karl Böhm keeps the music moving along impulsively, always highlighting the symphonic strength of Beethoven’s musical argument. What makes the recording even more special is a Schubert Fifth with exactly the same qualities. Someone at DG clearly knows where the treasures are buried. A great disc.” –David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday
