The fifteenth volume of the Haydn2032 cycle is entitled ‘La Reine’. One might think that this nickname refers to Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, queen of numerous territories, but in fact the monarch honoured by the popular title of Symphony no.85 is her daughter, Marie Antoinette. It was said to be the favourite of ‘La Reine de France’, which is the full nickname of the work. The new volume also includes Symphony no.50, which delighted the Empress’s ears when she visited Prince Nicolaus Esterházy at his ‘Hungarian Versailles’ in 1773. Symphony no.62, which dates from 1780, the fortieth anniversary of Maria Theresa’s accession to the throne and also the last year of a life as eventful as it was glorious, rounds off this latest instalment of the complete recording of the symphonies conducted by Giovanni Antonini, here at the helm of the Basel Chamber Orchestra.

All previously released recordings of Franz Schubert’s symphonies and orchestral works with the Kammerorchester Basel under the Swiss oboist, composer and conductor Heinz Holliger received brilliant reviews. Audio awarded 5 stars for music and sound: “With the first chords, a tremendous force unfolds. Adorable the finale!”, 5 Stars were also given in Fono Forum, “lucky Schubert – and lucky us… one of the finest recordings!” Gramophone judged, “a CD recorded with wonderful sound” in rbb Kultur and “This cycle is swinging to become something big” (5 stars) in stereo. With this sixth album, Heinz Holliger and the Kammerorchester Basel conclude the Schubert cycle with a particularly interesting repertoire of his orchestral works. Namely, the overture in D major, D. 12, as well as the Symphony in D major, D936a. The overture has both tender and great dramatic orchestral moments. Heinz Holliger says about her: “The doors open to a whole world of music, to the greatest thing that exists in music history at all.” The surviving fragments of the symphony in D major, arranged by the Swiss composer Roland Moser, appear as a world premiere recording and are an experiment between orchestral and chamber music . The album is complemented by the Grand Duo Sonata in C major, D. 812, originally a piano sonata, now arranged for nine instruments.

With the album “Bologna 1666”, released in 2017, the Basel Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Julia Schröder took listeners on a musical journey to what was probably Italy’s most important musical center in the 17th century and discovered outstanding works. Founded in 1666, the Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna, one of the oldest music academies in Italy, influenced musical life at the time far beyond Italy’s borders. It is therefore all the more surprising that, with the exception of a few composers such as Giuseppe Torelli or Giacomo Antonio Perti, most of them have fallen into oblivion.

The fourteenth volume of the Haydn2032 edition is entitled L’Imperiale , after the nickname given to Symphony no.53 in the nineteenth century. This was perhaps Haydn’s most famous symphony during his lifetime. Premiered in the theatre at Eszterháza Palace in 1778, it was published in London around 1781, and its melodious Andante was arranged more than thirty times for various instruments between 1783 and 1820. It made a decisive contribution to Haydn’s success, opening the way for him to perform in England. Symphony no.54 , whose entertaining, theatrical style is a perfectly match for the atmosphere of the legendary court festivities given at Eszterháza around 1775, completes this programme along with no.33, one of his first festive works with trumpets, composed c.1761. In his introductory text, Giovanni Antonini revels in the ‘capricious’, whimsical character of certain passages in the last movement of Symphony No. 53 ; he also offers an alternative finale of the work at the end of the album.

This new album of the Basel Chamber Orchestra shows references between French and Russian music at the end of the 19th century. Dmitry Smirnov interprets the 1st and 4th violin concertos by Édouard Lalo. The latter is called “Concerto russe” because it contains songs from the folk song collection op. 24 by Rimsky-Korssakoff. Smirnov has now arranged these songs himself for chamber orchestra or for violin and orchestra. Presented in this context, the songs add an extremely interesting new note to the musical bridge-building. Musical direction: Heinz Holliger.

Under the title Gli impresari, The Impresarios – i.e. the directors of the theatre troupes that Nikolaus I, Prince Esterházy engaged to perform in his opera houses – this CD gathers together some of the orchestral works by Joseph Haydn linked by their origin and their reception; they were originally conceived as theatre music, before their metamorphosis into symphonies (…)The period from 1772 onwards, when Karl Wahr was responsible for for the summer theatre programme at Esterháza, saw the peak of the multidisciplinary collaboration taking place between the court music directed by Haydn and companies engaged from outside. (…) At the end of 1775 and the beginning of 1776, while Joseph Haydn was occupied in transforming his music for Collé’s comedy into a symphony for concert performance, Karl Wahr was enjoying enormous success with his theatrical entertainments in the ballroom at the theatre in Salzburg. It was there, on 3 January 1776, that Thamos, King of Egypt was staged, a heroic drama whose choruses, musicologists now believe, were composed by none other than Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; for this Salzburg performance he also composed four instrumental entractes (recorded for this disc) as well as a melodrama and a Don Giovanni-esque descent into hell. A new album based on the work of Neapolitan composer Nicola Porpora, so rarely recorded, is an exceptional event: here is the 1747 Christmas oratorio Il Verbo in carne (“Verb in the flesh”). One of the unique aspects here is how the birth of Christ is presented philosophically and allegorically, far removed from traditional nativity oratorios’ texts that borrow almost exactly from the Bible. Instead, four virtues are introduced in turn: humanity, justice, peace, and truth. The form remains rooted in the genre’s tradition, alternating between recitatives (dry for some, accompanied by an orchestra for others), arias and choruses. As always with Porpora, each number is particularly demanding, both in terms of expressivity and vocal virtuosity, breathtaking at times! The pre-classic orchestra relies on chords, a few wind instruments (flutes, bassoons, horns, the norm at the time, but the absence of the oboe, the trumpets and the timpani for the most striking moments is worth noting; maybe they weren’t available to Porpora at the time) and of course the continuous bass. The Basel Chamber Orchestra, led by Riccardo Minasi, lays a perfect foundation for the excellent panel of singers.

In February 2015 Heinz Holliger conducted a performance of Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony with the Basel Chamber Orchestra. The result was so compelling that Holliger and the orchestra decided to record all the symphonies, together with a selection of Schubert’s operatic overtures. The project began in 2017 and is scheduled to end in 2019. An encounter between Schubert and Holliger could be described as a meeting of kindred spirits. Both as a composer and as a performer Holliger is closely associated with German Romanticism. Friedrich Hölderlin, Robert Schumann, Nikolaus Lenau and many others have been his constant companions in life. The ambiguities, the masks, the element of magic and enchantment, the singing, the fairytales and the ghosts – these are as much a part of Holliger’s world as they are of Schubert’s.

Having been one of the most dazzling oboists of the 20th century, Heinz Holliger has decided to pursue a career as a conductor alongside his active role as a composer. He now continues his complete series of Schubert Symphonies here, paying great attention to detail and showcasing their composition and structure. There is no sadness in his version of Symphony No. 4 in C minor, despite having been given the title of “Tragic” by the young composer. It’s unknown why he did so, but it was probably because of its similarity to the main key in the Fifth Symphony and Beethoven’s “Corolian” Overture, which he greatly admired. Rather, the incredible openness and luminosity of the music reflects a care-free and light-hearted youth.

The year 2017 was a vintage one for Giovanni Antonini: he was awarded an Echo Klassik, two Gramophone Awards and a Diapason d’Or of the Year for his recent releases. Two of these prizes distinguished Il Distratto, volume 4 of the complete recording of the Haydn symphonies on which he embarked for Alpha in 2014. For the sixth volume, released in 2018, the Milanese conductor is again joined by the Kammerorchester Basel, which shares the project with Il Giardino Armonico and which he knows very well, since he conducts it regularly and they have made many recordings together, including volume 5 of the Haydn series. This volume focuses on symphonies with a ‘sacred’ inspiration: the Symphony No.26, ‘Lamentatione’, was composed in 1768 for Holy Week, and no.30 was nicknamed ‘Alleluja’ after the plainchant melody Haydn uses in it. Symphony No.41 was written in 1769.

Haydn2032, the ambitious project of recording the complete symphonies of Haydn, has been placed from the start under the artistic direction of Giovanni Antonini, with two ensembles, Il Giardino Armonico, which made the first four volumes, and the Kammerochester Basel, to which this fifth volume and the next two are assigned. Another characteristic of the edition is that each time Haydn is set in perspective with another composer; here it is Joseph Martin Kraus (1756-92): ‘Kraus was the first man of genius that I met. Why did he have to die? It is an irreparable loss for our art. The Symphony in C minor he wrote in Vienna specially for me is a work which will be considered a masterpiece in every century’, said Haydn in 1797. Though he long remained forgotten after his death, Kraus made an active contribution to the movement of poetic renewal called ‘Sturm und Drang’ or ‘Geniezeit’ (time of genius) because such artists as the young Goethe broke free of all tradition to follow their hearts alone. When Haydn called Kraus homme de génie, in French, he probably had this context in mind. The two composers had met in Vienna in 1783.
