For this new recording of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Jordi Savall conducts an all-female orchestra, as Vivaldi did in his time at the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice. The soloist Alfia Bakieva is a violinist of Tatar origin currently living in Salzburg, Austria. She is a multi-instrumentalist, parti- cularly in the field of folk music, playing violin, folk fiddle, kyl- kobiz, ghizzhak and similar instruments. She studied Baroque violin with Enrico Onofri (Palermo Conservatory) and Hiro Kurosaki (Mozarteum University), focusing on historically in- formed performance practices in the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical and Romantic repertoires. Such a profile made her the ideal candidate for a collaboration with Jordi Savall. She plays a Francesco Ruggeri violin, built in 1680 in Cremona, Italy. This double album sold at the price of a single new release of- fers the recording of the Four Seasons with and without the son- nets written by Vivaldi and four others concerti by Vivaldi. The version with read text sheds a particularly revealing light on Vivaldi’s work.

With the Missa solemnis, Beethoven created one of the most haunting settings of the liturgy of the Mass, whose premiere, however, already took place in the concert hall and not in a church setting. With his two ensembles Le Concert des Nations and La Capella Nacional de Catalunya, as well as first-class soloists, Jordi Savall invites listeners to take a fresh and authentic look at this famous composition by the Viennese classicist. Playing on period instruments, the musicians allow Beethoven’s moving sound world to shimmer in all its nuances.

Deluxe remastering of three recordings that include the three most famous songbooks of the Golden Age (1451-1595). The Sevillian Cancionero de la Colombina and Cancionero Musical de Medinaceli are samples of a musical humanism with a distinctly Hispanic stamp, in which the cultured and the popular come together. The Castilian Cancionero de Palacio is the most valuable and representative jewel of the repertoire performed in the itinerant Courts of the Catholic Kings, including songs, Christmas carols, ballads and ‘extravagances’ by authors such as Encina, Millán, Escobar, Anchieta and Peñalosa.
The Capella Reial de Catalunya, Hespèrion XX and Jordi Savall made them known to the world through these famous recordings made between 1991 and 1992.

Jordi Savall & Le Concert des Nations – Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 4 ‘Italian’ (2023)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 59:51 minutes | 997 MB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Alia Vox
After Haydn, Beethoven and Schubert, Jordi Savall continues his journey into the 19th century with the Italian Symphony of Felix Mendelssohn, a composer he records for the first time. He delivers 2 versions of the work: the one which was performed at the wolrdwide premiere in 1833 and the revised one from 1834. The most conspicuous changes are to be found in the last tree movements. The comparison of the two scores and the performance on period instruments take us as close to Mendelssohn’s work and original intention as we will ever get. Thanks to Jordi Savall’s insightful conducting, there is still something to discover in Mendelssohn’s most famous symphony.

Over the last 15 years, Jordi Savall has been exploring the links between Western and Eastern repertoires because he regards this work as a way to develop a better mutual understanding. On Oriente Lux, Hespèrion XXI plays alongside the ensemble Orpheus 21, created by him in the wake of the recent migrant crisis to welcome musicians from countries stricken by war, hunger or disasters to draw attention to the dignity shared of all humankind. The idea – prevailing during the Middle Ages – of a light coming from the East, Oriente Lux, is actualized on this recording with the fruitful encounter of repertoires from Syria, Bangladesh, Kurdistan, Afghanistan, Greece, Lebanon, Irak, Morocco, Tunisia and Turkey.

Published in 1604, Dowland’s Lachrimae was composed for an ensemble of five viols and a lute. The collection contains seven Pavans based on the air Flow My Tears (which explains the work’s subtitle, Seaven Teares Figured in Seaven Passionate Pavans). These variations are alternated with Galiards and Almands for contrast. Jordi Savall’s 1987 recording with Hesperion XX is still a cornerstone of any Dowland discography. This critically acclaimed album is now available for the first time in a vivid multichannel remastering.

There are few myths in Greek mythology more obscure or more laden with symbolism than that of Orpheus. Extremely ancient in origin, it developed into a veritable theology around which an abundant and largely esoteric literature developed. Orpheus is the “singer” par excellence, the musician and the poet. He played not only the lyre with admirable skill, but also the zither, the invention of which is attributed to him. It was said that the airs he sang and played were so sweet that wild beasts followed in his train, trees and plants bowed down to him and the fiercest of men were totally subdued by his music.

At the age of 14, Jordi Savall attended a rehearsal of Mozart’s Requiem. He was so strongly moved by the music that he decided to become a musician himself … From 2021 to 2023, Savall again worked intensively on Mozart’s last work as a musician and intellectual. Together with soloists, the choir La Capella Nacional de Catalunya and the orchestra Le Concert des Nations, a new interpretation was developed in intensive rehearsals, and six concerts, which is now available. Says Savall: “Rarely has a composition been so strongly shaped by the genius and suffering of a human being.”

For this set of Beethoven’s first five symphonies, Jordi Savall began with the fundamental idea of recovering the original sound of the orchestra and tempo as the composer imagined them. All the orchestral work was performed with instruments corresponding to those used at the time, and by 55-60 musicians, a number similar to that arranged by the composer. 35 players were selected from Le Concert des Nations alongside 20 young musicians from different countries across world. The main goal was to reflect, in our 21st century, all the richness and beauty of these symphonies, through a true balance between colors and the quality of the orchestra’s natural sound.

The Concert des Nations shows that it also knows how to magnify the repertoire of the early 19th century, which will be confirmed by a forthcoming Schubert album.

The twenty pieces comprising the musical collection in the Codex Trujillo del Perú are an exceptional case in the history of the indigenous music of the New World. This collection of tonadas, cachuas, tonadillas, bayles, cachuytas and lanchas offers a glimpse of the repertory native to the traditions of the country, as indicated by the text of one of the cachuas sung “al uso de nuestra tierra” (“according to the customs of our land”) and in particular the songs and dances favoured by the popular classes who lived in the “Viceroyalty of Peru” at the end of the 18th century.

Esprit d’Armenie (Armenian Spirit) is a tribute to Armenia and to the Armenian musicians who have played alongside Jordi Savall and his wife Montserrat Figueras over the years. The repertoire consists alternately of very lively pieces and more contemplative ones, all of them beautifully played on traditional instruments, including the duduk, a flute with a deeply moving sound originating from a time before times. Jordi Savall unveils this music with his faultless musical flair and an endless curiosity.
