This record sees the most francophone (and francophile) of the German tenors take up a few pearls from the French repertoire. What’s more, it’s not only the big hits: “La fleur que tu m’avais jetée” is up in front, but also – or even, first and foremost – much rarer pearls have been fished up from the shoals of Meyerbeer, Berlioz, Thomas or Lalo. Jonas Kaufmann has succeeded in developing an irreproachable French elocution, in an equally impeccable style, denuded of the base Italianisms – glissandos, cooing, sobs, parasitic diphthongs, fermatas on the high Cs, etc. – that so many tenors (Italians, yes, but also French singers, including some stars…) impose on this music, which is not built to support them. Kaufmann’s voice, which almost approaches a baritone, confers a different masculinity onto these roles (which is neither a virtue nor a vice, but a fundamental quality) and a depth for which the roles of Nadir, Don José or Werther all cry out. Moreover, Kaufmann’s dynamic palette, from the fullest fortissimo to the suavest murmur, including on the high notes, is a joy to behold. The excellent Ludovic Tézier provides his counterpart in the duo of Pêcheurs de perles, while Sonia Yoncheva takes on the role of the tender Manon – even if the latter’s French still leaves a little to be desired.

Italy! Like nowhere else on earth – the sunshine and sea salt, the smell of citrus and coffee, a flirtatious glance, an incomparable song drawn deep from the heart. Italy and its immortal music have a magical pull on people like no other culture – and Jonas Kaufmann feels this particularly keenly. The new album Dolce vita is his tribute to this culture, this way of life that has conceived one immortal melody after the other for the tenor voice and influenced him so much. Built to specifications set down by Joseph Goebbels for the 1936 Olympic Games as a showcase of triumphant Nazism, this open-air stage was inspired by the ancient theatre of Epidaurus, and had almost perfect acoustics. With the theatre renamed “Waldbühne” (forest stage) and the ghosts of the past exorcised, this gigantic space was used in the 1960s for boxing matches and rock concerts, including the 1965 Rolling Stones show which ended in a veritable riot. There was nothing like that on the July evening in 2018 when Jonas Kaufmann gave his recital, although a very large crowd had come to hear their national tenor deliver a 100% Italian repertoire. It was chilly that night in Berlin, with rainclouds threatening, but the 20,000 spectators gave long ovations for Jonas Kaufmann and the Berlin Radio Orchestra, conducted by Jochen Rieder, in this concert which was also graced by the Georgian mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili.

“It’s Christmas!” is the first Christmas album by the German world star. Jonas Kaufmann has selected his favorite Christmas songs from Germany and around the world and recorded them with fantastic musicians. The German Christmas songs Jonas Kaufmann chose are closely connected with his memories of happy Christmases with his family, that’s why on CD 1 there are not only well-known German Christmas songs like “Leise rieselt der Schnee”, “Alle Jahre wieder …”, “Vom Himmel hoch” or “Tochter Zion” on the album, but also special Bavarian folk tunes like “Es wird scho glei dumpa” and “Im Woid is so staad”. A highlight on the album is certainly the touching “Silent Night”, in which Jonas Kaufmann is accompanied only by a harp. American Christmas songs such as “White Christmas”, “O Holy Night”, “Let it snow” and “Winter Wonderland” are also among Kaufmann’s favorites, because his father often put on the legendary Christmas records by Bing Crosby, Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald after the presents at Christmas. In addition, CD 2 also features particularly beautiful French, English, Italian and Swedish Christmas songs in new arrangements.

Diana Damrau and Jonas Kaufmann, reigning stars of opera, are also consummate interpreters of song. In early 2018, with master pianist Helmut Deutsch, they performed Hugo Wolf’s multi-faceted Italienisches Liederbuch in 12 cities around Europe. “One couldn’t ask for more,” wrote the Telegraph after their London concert, which took place two days before this live recording was made in the German city of Essen.

Carmen was premiered at the (second) Salle Favart, the home of Paris’ Opéra-Comique – then as now in the Place Boieldieu – on 3 March 1875. Georges Bizet, its composer, died of a heart attack exactly three months later, on 3 June, aged 36. In his short life he had written, in whole or in part, more than a dozen works for the lyric stage, ranging from one-act operettas to five-act grand operas: and had contemplated at least a dozen more. He was exceptionally well connected in the tight-knit and faintly incestuous musical world of mid-19th-century Paris, and almost universally well-liked. Over 4,000 mourners attended his funeral in the Église de la Sainte-Trinité – the location of Rossini’s in 1868 and Berlioz’s the year after – including his former mentor Charles Gounod, so emotionally overwrought that he was unable to finish the eulogy at the subsequent interment at Père Lachaise. That night – 5 June – Carmen was given its 33rd performance at the Salle Favart; and this time the press that had greeted the work’s premiere with almost unanimous hostility was suddenly to be found bemoaning the loss of one of French music’s greatest talents.

This magnificent recording of Aida, made in Rome, rises to all the musical and dramatic challenges presented by Verdi’s richly-coloured Egyptian epic. Antonio Pappano, once again proving his mastery of Italian opera, moves between sumptuous grandeur and touching intimacy. The responses of the Orchestra e Coro dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia are both immediate and vibrant, while the singers – Anja Harteros, Jonas Kaufmann, Ekaterina Semenchuk, Ludovic Tézier and Erwin Schrott – do justice to every facet of their roles.

Gramophone Recording of the Month: “A magnificent achievement that gives enormous pleasure…Karajan has the Vienna Philharmonic but it is arguable that Pappano goes one better, with orchestral playing of rare accomplishment from an Italian ensemble which is alive to the opera’s every word.”

Tenor Jonas Kaufmann performs in concert at Teatro Carignano in Turin, Italy, accompanied by the Orchestra del Teatro Massimo di Palermo and conductor Asher Fisch. Featured in the concert are performances of Ruggiero Leoncavallo’s ‘Mattinata’, Francesco Sartori’s ‘Con Te Partirò’ and ‘Voglio Vivere Così’ by Giovanni d’Anzi.

‘Italians love to sing. They sing in the street, they sing while they go about their business. It is not just a cliché – in Italy, you see grown-up men just singing while they work, because they want to somehow express their feelings. Music is not only to make you smile, music is to make you think, and sometimes to understand that you’re not the only one carrying great problems with you. By expressing that in a song you can better live with it, because somebody found the right words, the right way to express what you’re feeling at that moment. The songs on this album show the whole range of emotions that italian music is capable of, just like in opera – but opera of course favours the dark moments. Here we have both darkness and light, and even in the darkest moment, the Italian finds a way to put a little bit of powdered sugar on top and to continue finding sweetness in life.’ –Jonas Kaufmann (more…)

With great result opera director and acting director of the Salzburg Festival Sven-Erich Bechtholf at the Salzburg Festival in 2012 staged an enriched with elements of theater, comedy and dance original version of Richard Strauss’s opera Ariadne auf Naxos. The premiere was hailed as a highlight of the festival, which was also due to the outstanding musical performance of all parties involved: the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and outstanding soloists shone under the baton of Daniel Harding. Jonas Kaufman gave a highly acclaimed debut as Bacchus and the other soloists were studded cast that includes Emily Magee (Ariadne), Elena Mosuc (Zerbinetta), Peter Mati (Steward), Cornelius Obonya (Monsieur Jourdain), Roberto Saccà, Regina Fritsch and Stefanie Dvorak.

Ariadne auf Naxos was the third collaboration by Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal, written directly after the great success of Der Rosenkavalier. Originally planned as a “divertissement with a small chamber orchestra”, the project expanded into a grand venture combining opera, drama and ballet – and was a flop at its world premiere in 1912. Now the Salzburg Festival pledges to fulfill “the still-wonderful dream of its creators: to bring together the different genres of theater, ballet, drama, music and singing.” Sven-Eric Bechtolf will direct this unconventional production, and has not only adapted Molière’s play Le Bourgeois gentilhomme, which preceded the opera at the time, but has also reinstated the ballet music written for it subsequently. “A hundred years have passed since Hofmannsthal began to work on this tale with the fiercely practical and dramaturgically highly talented Strauss, one hundred years since the disastrous world premiere of Ariadne auf Naxos. We take this ‘anniversary’ as an opportunity to revisit the original version. And where would this make more sense than in Salzburg?”
