Guitar / World / Easy Listening / Classical
John Williams, classical guitar virtuoso, is known for his wide-ranging approach to repertory, which includes appearances playing electric rock guitar and international music…
With his crystalline articulation and extraordinary rhythmic prowess, John Williams ranks among the greatest solo voices the acoustic guitar has ever known. Now, with the joyous evocations of the African guitar tradition, Williams has hit upon his most emotionally satisfying crossover recital to date. Though both chief soloist and arranger, Williams nevertheless avoids shining the spotlight on his virtuosic skills–even his solo showcase, “Masagna,” places greater emphasis on the tune’s folkish incantations. He allows plenty of melodic space for the likes of steel-string player John Ethridge, while guiding listeners through the idiomatic flora and fauna of the pan-African experience: from the hornpipelike airs of Madagascar (“Mitopa”) and kora-styled arpeggios of Mali (“Malinke Guitars”) through to intimations of South African vocal traditions with a lovely children’s chorus on the anthem of the African National Congress, “Nikosi Sikelel’I Africa.” Simply expressive and deeply felt, Magic Box exudes a universal vibe that transcends borders and nationalities.

Ever since the Star Wars franchise began in 1977, its music has been synonymous with legendary film composer John Williams. Now that the 86-year-old composer has announced that next year’s Episode IX will be the last time he’ll be scoring a Star Wars film, we can’t help feeling melancholic.
One of the most important things about any Star Wars movie is the soundtrack. Everyone knows how a Star Wars movie sounds. The opening is classic. There’s the great fanfare as the screen goes black and that big chord breaking into the familiar, triumphant main theme when the crawl starts. There are the leitmotifs of Luke, Leia, and The Imperial March, some of which fans can sing by heart. But the Solo: A Star Wars Story soundtrack is very different. For one thing, they don’t have the opening. Why? Because, like Rogue One before it, Solo is an anthology film, and does not have a crawl.
Solo is also like Rogue One in that composer John Williams did not write the score. He contributed (more on this in a minute) but the overall score was done by musician John Powell, who is best known for his work on How To Train Your Dragon and Shrek. (Yes, Shrek.)
The score for Solo is 20 tracks in all, 19 of which are done by Powell. The good news is none of the titles listed on the album are direct spoilers, so one can peruse the names in peace. Though some do bring to mind questions, such as the track entitled “Lando’s Closet.” Seriously, the man’s wardrobe gets its own theme song.

Over the 90-year history of sound film, there have been a handful of instances where a director and a composer have formed a longtime partnership that resulted in a series of classical scores, creating music that stands the test of time. None, however, have been as long or as fruitful as the 43-year collaboration of Steven Spielberg and John Williams. None have encompassed such a wide range of subject matter or, more significantly, have had such an enormous impact on worldwide popular culture. From the ominous shark signature of Jaws to the five-note alien greeting of Close Encounters of the Third Kind; from the heroic march of Raiders of the Lost Ark to the moving themes for Schindler’s List the music Williams has written for more than two dozen Spielberg projects has not only served them brilliantly but entered the wider public consciousness.

The original album was released to accompany the film (May 4, 1999). This release was certified Platinum in the U.S. and Gold in the UK, containing 17 tracks from selections of the score, meant to stand alone as a separate listening experience and not as one hears the score in the film. John Williams edited each track to present the score as one would hear it in a concert suite. Recorded in Abbey Road studios over a week, starting on February 10, 1999 performed by the London Voices and London Symphony Orchestra, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace was the first Star Wars score Williams had composed in over 16 years. The scores of the following two films would rely heavily upon tracking from this score, a decision that Williams and George Lucas had made early into production of the film.
“Once again, John Williams has exceeded my expectations and produced a lavish, rich, moving and thrilling score. Every fan of Star Wars—and of great music—is in his debt.” (George Lucas)

By the end of the 1970s, John Williams was already a legend among filmmakers and film-scoring buffs. But the success of Star Wars elevated him to something he probably could have scarcely imagined–bona fide pop-culture icon. Williams’s masterful score to the first Star Wars sequel (and the chapter many sci-fi fans cite as the series’ most dark, emotionally complex, and satisfying) fleshes out his original character themes with some new ones while painting compelling musical portraits of alien worlds as disparate as the ice planet Hoth and the swampy Dagobah. Notable are the menacing, Prokofiev-inspired “Imperial Theme (Darth Vader’s March)”; the noble “Yoda and the Force”; and Hoth’s “Battle” cues, which are some of the most dramatic action cues ever. This expanded edition also fleshes out the already familiar themes with new tracks that restore the score to its status as a grand galactic symphony. A richly illustrated booklet is included as well, helping listeners place each piece of music in its proper cinematic context. Of his four attempts at coloring George Lucas’s rich stellar saga, this remains Williams’s most consistent and compelling.

Originally released alongside the movie in 2005, the Episode III: Revenge of the Sith soundtrack features a score by five-time Oscar winner John Williams, who is also the composer and conductor of the score for each film in the 9 – chapter Star Wars saga. The score found on the Episode III soundtrack is decidedly darker than previous Star Wars prequel soundtracks, as the musical themes match the growing darkness woven into the story and the galaxy as the Empire consolidates its power at the conclusion of the prequel trilogy. Many of the heroic, anthemic themes woven throughout Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith will nonetheless be very familiar to any fan of the series, from the “Imperial March” to the main theme.
