Toronto born, New York-based drummer Harris Eisenstadt adds some unique flavour to his his impressive list of projects with this intriguing bicoastal quartet on his 15th album as leader since 2001. Golden State continues his career-long interest in writing for orchestral instruments in chamber and improvising contexts, however unlike his previous recordings this is a collection of short compositions rather than one or two long-form pieces. Joining Eisenstadt in Golden State is flutist Nicole Mitchell, bassoonist Sara Schoenbeck and Mark Dresser on contrabass.

Award-winning New York drummer Harris Eisenstadt’s long-running group returns with its 4th and most accomplished record yet, a thoroughly entertaining, provocative program of original compositions that blends swinging modern jazz and spikier, off-center avant-jazz styles. The band’s idiosyncratic sound world features close percussive/textural interplay between gorgeous vibist Chris Dingman and Eisenstadt, who leads from the kit almost like a modern-day Art Blakey. Frontline soloists Nate Wooley (whom Dave Douglas has called “one of the most interesting and unusual trumpeters living today”) and tenor saxist Matt Bauder (who recently toured for a year with Arcade Fire) play the whole jazz/improv tradition with great verve and character, and have their own following as leaders. Pascal Niggenkemper (Gerald Cleaver’s Black Host) joins Canada Day and blends seamlessly, showing why he’s become one of the busiest young bass players in New York. The 24 bit/192K recording has great dynamics and transparency.

Third release by NY drummer’s working quintet, following his highly praised Canada Day II, features the same winning combination of post-bop/post-rock grooves and creative-jazz savvy. Eisenstadt’s precise yet flexible drumming integrates the inventions of the soloists and the vibes-based rhythm section into an expressive whole. His musicians, leaders in their own right, all have great taste and distinctive personalities – this band doesn’t sound like any other. HighRes recording lays out the music in vivid detail.

This is the second release from drummer Harris Eisenstadt’s quintet Canada Day, given its name for playing its first gig on Canada Day in 2007. A true drummer’s album, it features buoyant, dancing rhythms; bass and drums interact with each other and with the vibes and front line from tune to tune, the individual voices pulling against each other cohere all the more.
“A melting pot of all kinds of rhythms, harmonies and vamps … the band gave it a sense of proportion and finesse …”

This new international chamber-jazz trio with classical and avant leanings features beautiful tunes and tasty improvisation. Canadian clarinetist François Houle, British pianist Alexander Hawkins, and NY-based Canadian drummer Harris Eisenstadt are highly regarded leaders and genuinely sympatico. The program features original compositions by all three plus pieces by Steve Lacy, Andrew Hill and Charles Ives. The group first came together for the 2014 Vancouver jazz festival and played some wild improvisational music but the record is mostly on the more lyrical and contemplative side. Houle and Eisenstadt and Hawkins and Eisenstadt have long histories of performing together, but Alex and François had not met previously. Their performing blend is different from previous Houle projects on Songlines with European pianists Benoît Delbecq and Håvard Wiik – perhaps more classically poised and spacious, but warm rather than cool, and with an edge when needed. Harris’s fastidious, highly textured drumming is the perfect percussive complement. Both Houle and Eisenstadt have extensive back catalogue on Songlines.
