This recording of Madama Butterfly is one of my all time favorites. It was one of the 1st records that I bought myself in the early 1970’s. Since then I have acquired original 1963 LP pressings, UK-made LP’s, the the original R2R tape, & the old CD issue, all in hopes of finding the best sounding edition. Up till now, the Reel-Reel tape was the best, apparently avoiding the some of the dull Dynagroove equalization that RCA imposed on this & most of its subsequent 1960’s releases.
Now here is where the DSD/SACD mastering has proved its worth! This disc reveals a master recording of breadth & subtlety, the equal of any of the “Living Stereo” era recordings. The 3D soundstage is spacious, the orchestra warm & detailed, & the voices exquisitely clear & vivid. All of this is in a sound environment that is never forced or harsh. I think one can safely say that we have never truly heard this beautiful performance in all of its glory until now.

Sony Classical is delighted to offer lovers of singing another ten complete recordings from the RCA Red Seal, CBS/Sony Classical and Eurodisc catalogues. The latest instalment of this wide-ranging series not only features some of the greatest voices of the last century but also spotlights once popular works that have been unduly neglected in recent times. At the Metropolitan in the second half of the last century, the core Italian repertoire was dominated by a formidable triumvirate of stars: soprano Leontyne Price, tenor Plcido Domingo and baritone Sherrill Milnes. Two of their most memorable recordings were set down by RCA in London in the early 1970s, both conducted by Erich Leinsdorf. “Price, the supreme Verdi soprano of her time,” declared the BBC Music Magazine, “is unsurpassed as Aida … [with] Domingo and Milnes on top form and Grace Bumbry as a formidable Amneris.” Gramophone also lauded Leinsdorf’s contribution: “He catches the grandeur of the public scenes, the delicacy of the intimate ones and carefully judges the weight and pace of each scene.”

A whole piano revolution was launched in the west (meaning USA) in October and early November 1960. Richter had arrived. He came and conquered. Both in Chicago, where RCA recorded the Brahms Piano Concerto No 2 and New York, where he launched his career outside Russia with performances, not of the usual piano career intros of Tchaikovsky or Grieg, but a bunch of Beethoven Piano Sonatas.
Audiences were mesmerised but Richter didn’t appreciate their ardour. He never went back to the US and he didn’t like his recording of the Brahms 2nd Piano Concerto either. No one seems to know why, other that he hated committing any of his interpretations to record.
If there’s one overriding consideration, his hundreds of recordings have stood the test of time and most have never been out of print. This superb recording of the Brahms second – described by some as a Symphony in 4 movements with piano accompaniment – is, nearly 60 years later, refreshingly brilliant. Its remastering by HDTT is superb.
