Concertante orchestral works for more than one keyboard instrument saw a revival after the First World War with the neo-Baroque trends of the time helping to revitalize the neglected concerto grosso genre. Recorded here in a new version with three pianos, Martin’s Petite symphonie concertante reflects the dark tensions of the Second World War, while Poulenc’s delightful Concerto for Two Pianos is infused with the spirit of Mozart in its rich and eclectic stylistic tapestry. Shostakovich’s Concertino, in a new orchestral version, shifts between superficial Soviet entertainment and heartfelt expressiveness, and the songs quoted in Aryeh Levanon’s Land of Four Languages symbolize a hope for peace and harmony in Israel.

The cello was a vital part of Catalan musical expression in the first half of the 20th century. Although the symphonies, string quartets and concertos represent the core of his achievement, Shostakovich had wide sympathies across the musical spectrum: hence his oft-repeated comment that he enjoyed all music from Bach to Offenbach. All the works on this disc – which opens with a suite from the ballet The Bolt and concludes with his orchestration of Tea for Two – attest to a composer who entered into the spirit of ‘light music’ with enjoyment and enthusiasm. The so-called Jazz Suite No.2 (sketches for the original Jazz Suite No.2 have only recently been discovered) is in fact the Suite for Stage Variety Orchestra, drawn from various ballet, film and theatres scores, with saxophones and accordion to the fore. The Second Waltz, recently found popularity as the title music for Stanley Kubrick’s last film, “Eyes Wide Shut”.

All the works on this release will come as a surprise to those who know Shostakovich only as a concert composer in the Beethovenian tradition. Dmitry Yablonsky and the Russian State Symphony Orchestra show another side of the composer with the Jazz Suites and especially on Tea for Two. These musical divergences shouldn’t be surprising: while the symphonies, string quartets and concertos represent the core of his achievement, Shostakovich had wide sympathies across the musical spectrum, hence his oft-repeated comment that he enjoyed all music from Bach to Offenbach.

Kara Karayev was one of the most prominent figures in the music of 20th-century Azerbaijan, and an inspiration to subsequent generations of Azerbaijani composers. His eloquently expressive and tautly dramatic First Symphony is a significant work in Karayev’s output, reflecting both the harmonies and melodic characteristics of the South Caucasus region and, in its orchestral brilliance, the influence of his mentor Shostakovich. The Violin Concerto shows a notable shift in style, exploring the serial techniques that add astringency and inventive depth to Karayev’s already richly coloured and vividly diverse palette.

Ukranian composer Valentin Silvestrov has said that I do not write new music. My music is a response to and an echo of what already exists. This is particularly pertinent to works such as the Two Dialogues with Postscript that engage hauntingly with Schubert and Wagner, and the evocative Moments of Memory II which alludes to Chopin and yearns for an unreachable past. Music is still song, even if one cannot literally sing it, says Silvestrov.
