The phenomenal rise to fame of the conductor Herbert von Karajan is linked indissolubly with the name of Beethoven. He first reached the heights in 1937, when he was Aachen’s General Musical Director (still under thirty years of age, he was the youngest man in Germany to hold such a post), by directing a memorable performance of Fidelio in Berlin. Another landmark in his career is the present complete recording of Beethoven’s nine symphonies with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, a series among which the presentation of the ‘Eroica’ is a greatly admired achievement in its own right. The Berlin Philharmonic is undoubtedly Karajan’s orchestra: in 1956, after the death of Wilhelm Furtwängler and an American tour, which Karajan conducted with outstanding brilliance, the orchestra unanimously appointed him artistic director for life. Under his conductorship the orchestra has achieved great triumphs and has deeply moved its listeners both in Berlin and on innumerable national and international tours, above all, perhaps, in performances of the ‘Eroica’ and the other outstanding symphonies of Beethoven (From the original LP notes, 1963)

Anton Bruckner is a composer with an unmistakable musical language: darkly glowing, overwhelmingly beautiful, but also energetic and innovative. For the Berliner Philharmoniker, this music has been part of their artistic identity for over a hundred years. The orchestra now presents Bruckner’s symphonies in an exclusive edition, recorded over the last ten years together with some of the foremost Bruckner interpreters of our time.

The radio recordings between 1939 and 1945 with the Berliner Philharmoniker and Wilhelm Furtwangler are among classical music’s most compelling sound documents. Created at the peak of the collaboration between orchestra and conductor, Furtwangler’s artist personality is conveyed more vividly than anywhere else. What can be heard is music in which inspiration and the expressive will know no bounds and in which, not least, the existential experience of the Second World War reverberates. For the first time, the Berliner Philharmoniker are releasing a complete edition of these recordings.

Wagner interpretations with Herbert von Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker have a quality all of their own. Critics always admired the ability of the musicians to bring out not only Wagner’s luscious sound, but also all the subtleties of the score. Moreover, Karajan was able to rally the singers to successfully convey the lyrical tenderness of Wagner’s heroes despite their vocal powers.

Yundi Li was propelled on to the international stage when he won first prize at the XIV Chopin International Piano Competition at the age of 18, becoming the youngest and first Chinese winner in the history of the prestigious competition. He has since caused a sensation in the world’s leading concert halls.
During his tours, recitals and concertizing, performing some of the greatest masterpieces of piano literature, it seemed inevitable that this fine artist would eventually record Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto. Yundi Li performed this work with conductor Daniel Harding and the Berlin Philharmonic. The recording also includes a performance of a fascinating solo work, Schumann’s Fantasie in C major.
