Marek Janowski, the Dresdner Philharmonie and the MDR Leipzig Radio Choir present Haydn’s oratorio Die Schöpfung (1798), together with soprano Christiane Karg, tenor Benjamin Bruns and bass Tareq Nazmi. During his London sojourns, the aging Haydn was astounded by the audience engagement at performances of Handel’s oratorios, and he aimed to realize something similar in his own work. From the legendary breakthrough of light in the orchestral introduction all the way to the hymn to the almighty creator in the finale, Haydn offers a sweeping, colourful tableau of God’s creation of the world. As such, the work offers the apotheosis of the eighteenth-century oratorio while also serving as an inspiring example to nineteenth-century Romantic composers. Janowski and his forces realize both the Classical transparency and Romantic drive of this epoch-making piece. Marek Janowski is one of the most celebrated conductors of our time and has a vast Pentatone discography, chiefly consisting of German operas and symphonic works. From 2019 to 2023 he was Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Dresdner Philharmonie. Die Schöpfung is his sixth Pentatone recording with this orchestra, with whom he recently released Schubert’s Unfinished and Great Symphonies (2023), as well as Schumann’s complete symphonies (2024). The MDR Leipzig Radio Choir has frequently featured on Pentatone recordings and starred on Bruckner Haydn Motets (2021) and Mendelssohn Choral Works (2023). Guido Bardi, the son of the Duke of Florence, kneels before Bianca, the wife of the rich merchant Simone, and holds her hands. Simone enters the room, having returned early from a business trip. – The very beginning of Alexander Zemlinsky’s one-act opera based on Oscar Wilde’s “A Florentine Tragedy” in the German translation by Max Meyerfeld shows the conflict from which the tragedy arises. The stage work by the Austrian composer, who was forgotten for many decades, had its world premiere on 30 January 1917 in Stuttgart and was not performed again until 1977.
This BR-KLASSIK album documents the Munich premiere with the Munich Radio Orchestra conducted by Patrick Hahn, which was recorded live in the Prinzregententheater on 27 November 2022.

Benjamin Bruns´ professional journey took him via the Dresden State Opera to the Vienna State Opera, where he remained a member of the ensemble until July 2020. His musical roster contains Mozart roles such as Belmonte (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Tamino (Die Zauberflöte) and Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni) but also other important repertoire like Fenton (Falstaff), Camille de Rosillon (The merry Widow), Lysander (Britten: A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Don Ramiro (La Cenerentola), or the Italian Tenor in the Strauss operas Capriccio and Der Rosenkavalier. With Wagner roles like Lohengrin, Loge (The Rhinegold) and Erik (The flying Dutchman) or Matteo in Strauss Arabella he made his first steps into the light dramatic repertoire. In spring 2020 he had his debut as Florestan in Beethovens Fidelio (1804) at the Vienna State Opera. Oratorio and lieder form an important counterweight to Benjamin Brunss stage work. At the heart of his extensive concert repertoire are the great sacred works by Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert and Mendelssohn. He has sung with such renowned ensembles as the Berlin Philharmonics, the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonics, the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, the Bach Collegium Japan, the WDR Symphony Orchestra as well as Choir and Orchestra of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome or the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin. This most recent release is a recording of Schuberts Winterreise.
