Following Anna Netrebko’s astounding success in Salzburg’s Il Trovatore production we are pleased to announce a very exciting opera release for the start of 2015, recorded during her U-Live tour in 2012.
Anna Netrebko performs Iolanta, the title role of one of Tchaikovsky’s most passionate, evocative scores and one of opera’s most enigmatic figures making the character her own and dedicating herself to championing this under-appreciated work.

In this live recording, maestro Emmanuel Villaume, with whom Netrebko collaborated on the successful “Souvenirs” album, leads a stellar cast comprising a number of Russia’s biggest opera stars (Markov, Skorokhodov, Kowaljow).

The hand-picked company of supporting artists makes this a significant addition to Netrebko’s discography and an artistically valuable addition to the DG catalogue.

Netrebko is scheduled for eight staged performances of Iolanta at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in January-February 2015, as well as a four-city U-Live produced European tour of concert performances and a Royal Albert Hall date later in the season.

Saving the best for last in the Richard Strauss anniversary 2014. The world’s most luxurious soprano, Anna Netrebko, sings Richard Strauss’ sumptuous Four Last Songs, accompanied by the Staatskapelle Berlin and Daniel Barenboim. An irresistible, all-star combination.

Netrebko is a phenomenon. The world’s best-selling active soprano and quite simply, the undisputed superstar – “la prima donna assoluta” (New York Post) – of opera today. Known equally for her poise, her sensuality and her voice’s unmistakable color, Strauss’s elegiac Four Last Songs are an exquisite vehicle for her expressive gifts: Netrebko’s first recording of these gorgeous, iconic songs.

Barenboim: conductor, pianist, humanitarian – perhaps the world’s most complete living musician. A venerated interpreter of Wagner, Mozart, Beethoven and Bruckner, in many ways the music of Richard Strauss represents the apotheosis of Barenboim’s musical ethos. In 1954, the then 11 year-old Barenboim was introduced to his idol, conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler. It was Furtwängler who conducted the world premiere of Strauss’ Four Last Songs in 1949

The Staatskapelle Berlin, one of Germany’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras boasts a proud Strauss tradition including great performances and recording under the composer himself, as well as under great Straussians Felix Weingartner, Leo Blech, Erich Kleiber, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Otto Klemperer, Clemens Krauss, Hans Knappertsbusch, Joseph Keilberth, Ottmar Suitner and Daniel Barenboim.

The Staatskapelle and Barenboim then interpret Ein Heldenleben, one of the most vivid and popular tone poems by Strauss, who himself was Generalmusikdirektor of the Staatskapelle a century ago.

Two of the biggest names in opera join forces for a live performance from historic Red Square in the heart of Moscow, captured in stunning sound and vision with 18 high definition cameras and 5.1 cinema surround sound.

Recorded at a superb live concert on 19 June 2013, Anna Netrebko and Dmitri Hvorostovsky return to their native Russia, singing a brilliant programme of popular arias and duets from some of the world’s best-loved operas, including Tosca, Eugene Onegin, and, celebrating Verdis bicentenary, Il trovatore. They are accompanied by Russias State Academic Symphony Orchestra “Evgeny Svetlanov” and the huge forces of the Academic Grand Choir Masters of Choral Singing, under the baton of Constantine Orbelian.

Every detail of the once-in-a-lifetime event is faithfully captured by director Frank Hof, whose work includes the memorable Anna Netrebko, Placido Domingo, and Rolando Villazon performance at Berlin’s Waldbuhne, which Classical CD Review called “an absolute knock-out”… The two brought “the audience to a stunned silence with the despairing aria from Eugene Onegin” Bloomberg reported.

7500 people were present on the Red Square, more than 400 cinemas have screened the concert worldwide. Channel 1 ( Russia) , ZDF (Germany) , Arte ( France, Germany) and ORF (Austria) all have been broadcasting the Red Square concert – literally millions of viewers have seen this great evening.

Anna Netrebko’s second disc is even more impressive than her first. She still may not be an absolutely polished, finished artist, but she’s working at it and presents here a very satisfying–-even thrilling–-program. She doesn’t quite have the stature or insights for Verdi’s Violetta yet, but aside from some smudged coloratura in low-lying passages she sings the first act scene quite well (capped with a well-placed, big E-flat). She’s close to ideal in the Sonnambula and Puritani excerpts, where her girlishness is entirely right, her coloratura dazzling, and her ability to sound tearful really impressive. The Lucia Mad Scene (also notable here for its use of the glass harmonica for which it was composed in place of the usual flute) is quite wonderful, even if the runs are sometimes not as well-delineated as they should be. And although she’s not vocally suited to Desdemona’s Willow Song and Ave Maria, she does manage to darken her voice to fit the character and presents a very moving portrait. The disc ends with an utterly charming “O mio babbino caro.” Artistry and everything else aside, her voice is just beautiful. Claudio Abbado’s leadership is ideal.

Soprano Anna Netrebko is a major box-office draw on both sides of the Atlantic, but her catalog has been short on the aria-selections albums that remain the way most buyers listen to recorded opera. This collection of verismo (“realism”) Italian arias goes a long way toward filling the hole. It’s actually a bit out in front of her repertoire, which has focused on Verdi, and before that Mozart, but as her voice has darkened she has announced plans to add some of the roles represented here to her repertoire. From what’s heard on the album, the prospects seem very good for a career phase that will elevate Netrebko’s star even higher than it already is. You can sample the aria “In questa reggia” from Turandot to assure yourself of Netrebko’s confidence in hitting the high notes, and hear one of several fine duet passages with the singer’s tenor husband, Yusif Eyvazov. But also take time to explore the big hits, like “Un bel dì vedremo,” from Madama Butterfly, where Netrebko seems to approach the music as if for the first time, and also some of the arias by some of the one-hit wonders of the verismo genre. With capable accompaniment from the Coro e orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia under Antonio Pappano, this is a major Netrebko release and a definitive verismo collection.

This is music of emotion, power and extraordinary drama – personally selected and performed by the best-selling soprano of the 21st century.

2013 marks Anna’s ten years as a solo performer, and ten years with Deutsche Grammophon. Netrebko lays claim to the tragic repertoire of Italian grand opera: A decade on from the award-winning Opera Arias, Anna reunites with specialist Verdi conductor Gianandrea Noseda to continue this extraordinary musical journey.
