German-American pianist André Previn appears as the soloist, backed by the London Symphony Orchestra lead by Sir Adrian Boult, for this presentation of Mozart’s Piano Concertos Nos. 17 & 24. The Piano Concerto No. 17 in G major, KV. 453 was written in 1784. The finale is a variation movement whose theme was sung by Mozart’s starling. The Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor, K. 491 was composed in the winter of 1785–1786, finished on 24 March 1786, three weeks after the completion of Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major. The work is one of only two minor-key piano concertos that Mozart composed, the other being the No. 20 in D minor. None of Mozart’s other piano concertos features a larger array of instruments: the work is scored for strings, woodwinds, horns, trumpets and timpani.

André Previn, the stunning conductor, great pianist and remarkable composer, has just passed away, on 28 February. “A Brilliant musician and gifted composer whose talents were endless” in the words of Itzhak Perlman, he left an extensive and versatile discography dominated by his evergreen interpretations of Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev ballets, his recording of Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue, one of the true great recordings of the last century, and his stellar collaborations with Itzhak Perlman.
In this recording, we hear him both play the piano solo part and conduct in two iconic concertos by Mozart, alongside Radu Lupu in the Double Concerto. It has been especially remastered in 24-bit/96kHz from original tapes.

During the 70s, André Previn, then chief director of the London Symphony Orchestra, was commissioned by the BBC to perform great works of the classical repertoire live from Fairfield Hall. These concerts, commented by Previn himself, were broadcasted on television and went down very well, taking a wide audience into classical music. This successful series led to the recording of the two above albums of orchestral showpieces, available for the first time in digital!

Prolific German jazz pianist André Previn may be best known as a conductor of symphony orchestras and as a film soundtrack composer, but he’s a well-established jazz pianist as well. Previn’s style is melodious and easygoing (influenced by piano masters Bud Powell and Oscar Peterson), but he can swing up a storm when he wants to. This a wonderful solo piano album from Andre Previn from 1967.
Just him. No one else. Beautiful music. You can’t ask for more than that. Andre at his solo best. If you like piano music then you must love Andre. He is one of the best. I wish someone would release this on cd though. It definitely needs to be. Pick it up. You won’t be disappointed.

Jascha Heifetz (1901–1987), whose style and repertoire exerted a decisive influence on most twentieth-century violinists, had an insatiable curiosity for discovering and rehabilitating long-forgotten works. We have Heifetz to thank for having dusted off, and made the first recordings of, Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy and Second Violin Concerto (see volumes 14 and 40), the concertos by Korngold and Conus (volume 27), and the two works featured here. He was also a key source of inspiration to the young Itzhak Perlman, who had not even turned twenty when he made his first recording of Sibelius’s Concerto in D minor (1966, RCA). Thirteen years later, he returned to the work for EMI, this time coupling it to great effect with the Suite in A minor by Christian Sinding, thereby paying tribute to a little-known composer who, alongside Grieg and Sibelius, was in fact one of the most authentic Scandinavian composers of his day.

Itzhak Perlman and André Previn have worked together in the recording studio on many occasions and on a wide-ranging repertoire. The latter has conducted the former in eleven works, their first joint production (Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole and Ravel’s Tzigane for RCA) dating back as far as 1968. All the albums that followed were made for EMI, beginning with this one, which they recorded in 1972. After that, they appeared together in orchestral works by Bartók (see volume 6), Goldmark and Sarasate (volume 17), Sibelius and Sinding (volume 21) and Conus and Korngold (volume 27). In addition, Previn moved to the keyboard to accompany Perlman on a number of rag and jazz albums (volumes 10 and 24) although, unlike Anne-Sophie Mutter and Gil Shaham (on DG), Perlman has never recorded Previn’s own sonatas or concertos.
