The music of Ravel is especially close to Alexandre Tharaud’s heart. Now, in partnership with the Orchestre National de France and conductor Louis Langrée, he has recorded both the composer’s piano concertos, pairing them with Noches en los jardines de España (Nights in the Gardens of Spain), Manuel de Falla’s sumptuous three-movement work for piano and orchestra. All three of these works have been part of Tharaud’s life since he was a teenager. Taking his connection to Ravel a step further, in 2024 the French pianist will be seen in a film based by director Anne Fontaine on the composer’s life, entitled Boléro.

This album was first released in March 2007. Following a benchmark Rameau album, Alexandre Tharaud continued in 2007 his exploration of French Baroque music with a programme focusing on the idea of play: ‘Taking Le Tic-Toc-Choc, a colourful piece I often use as an encore, as the centrepiece, I gathered together Couperin’s most “pianistic” pieces, concentrating on the playful aspect of some of them.’ This sensitive, inspired interpretation has in its turn become a landmark in the catalogue.

Alexandre Tharaud returns with an album of music by Haydn and Mozart composed between 1777 and 1786, including the latter’s masterpiece the Piano Concerto No.9 ‘Jeunehomme’ widely regarded as one of his greatest contributions to the genre. The piano works are elegantly woven together: while Tharaud performs Mozart’s cadenzas in the Piano Concerto No.9, the pianist has written his own for the Rondo in A – employing themes from ‘Jeunehomme’ – as well as for the Haydn concerto in which he uses motifs from Mozart’s famous Rondo ‘Alla Turca’ to give a truly Eastern European flavour to the work that seizes on the spirit of its final-movement Rondo all’Ungherese. The album sees Tharaud reunite with old friends: the award-winning French-Canadian chamber orchestra Les Violons du Roy under the baton of their music director Bernard Labadie, and the outstanding mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato in Mozart’s concert aria ‘Ch’io mi scordi di te?’.

This album brings together world premiere recordings of three aesthetically diverse piano concertos that were written for Alexandre Tharaud. They are Left, alone by the Dane Hans Abrahamsen (b. 1952), Future is a faded song by the Frenchman Gérard Pesson (b.1958) and Kuleshov by the Argentian-born Frenchman Oscar Strasnoy (b.1970). Strasnoy has said that his concerto was “inspired by Alexandre Tharaud’s unique and inimitable phrasing and clarity of playing.” No doubt those words could apply to all three works on the album.

Alexandre Tharaud records Beethoven for the first time! Beethoven’s last three sonatas, Nos. 30, 31, 32, composed 1820-22 and are considered some of the most difficult works in the repertoire. The NY Times said “[Alexandre Tharaud] imbued the opening of Beethoven’s Sonata No.31 (Op. 110) with a poetic introspection…”
“Alexandre Tharaud is a musician of wide interests, as compelling in the Baroque as he is delightful in a favourite disc of mine, ‘Le boeuf sur le toit’ (12/12). Now he has gone mainstream, with Beethoven’s last three sonatas.
