“The most exciting jazz pianist in Germany” was the title of Die Welt after the publication of “Michael Wollny’s Wunderkammer” in autumn 2009. And the Frankfurter Rundschau spoke of a “big step further in a completely new direction”. In fact, the album marked the beginning of a new era in the career of Michael Wollny. The pianist, who always manages to surprise his listeners and himself with his music, was subsequently elevated to the Olympus of European jazz: he received the coveted ECHO Jazz as the best pianist nationally, the Hamburger Abendblatt named him the “strongest (jazz) musician personality that Germany has produced since Albert Mangelsdorff” and the FAZ sees him as a “perfect piano master”, “who brings everything you can ask for from a perfect jazz pianist: virtuoso technique , exuberant fantasy, Discipline and the ability to creative chaos, sensuality, as well as aesthetic sense“.
No one plays the piano like Michael Wollny. His trademark: the unpredictable, the search for the previously unheard. His will: to constantly reinvent himself both sonically and compositionally. “Michael Wollny’s Wunderkammer”, recorded together with harpsichordist Tamar Halperin, bears witness to this: Piano, celesta, harpsichord, harmonium and feather Rhodes explore new soundscapes that fit somewhere between minimal music, electronic music and modal jazz. A wonderful sound trip.
The Wunderkammer has not let Wollny go since its appearance until today. On October 27, 2012, the German Jazz Festival Frankfurt gave him the opportunity to formulate his heart and soul affair on a large scale together with the hr big band. Arranger Jörg-Achim Keller took over the bigband orchestration. The concert in the hr broadcasting hall turned into a triumphant event: the “Wunderkammer XXL” sounded “impressively different in the context of subtly differentiated orchestral arrangements” and resulted in “a fascinating interplay between sophisticated keyboard magic and inspired ensemble playing” (Frankfurter Rundschau). The FAZ reported about “irrepressible joy of playing and creative-intelligent creative power”, which the “ingenious sound tinkerer Michael Wollny” created with the hr big band under Jim McNeely. The concert provoked real storms of enthusiasm in the audience. 20 Minutes of standing ovations were a novelty at the oldest German jazz festival, which has been taking place since 1953.
Michael Wollny wouldn’t be Michael Wollny if he didn’t already have new music in his head. Thus, the Collector’s Edition concludes a creative chapter and at the same time opens new doors: the pianist is currently in the studio with the American super bassist Tim Lefebvre, the proven [em] drummer Eric Schaefer and saxophone shooting star Marius Neset as a guest. The new album will be released at the end of February 2014 and will be presented on a big Jazznights tour from 21.3. in a double concert with the Nils Landgren Quartet.
