The vast heritage of Spanish traditional music lies at the heart of Manuel de Falla and Federico García Lorca’s works. Both men relied heavily on the great flamenco artists of their day: the ‘Canciones españolas antiguas’ (Old Spanish songs) were recorded for the first time in 1931 by the dancer and singer Encarnación López, ‘La Argentinita’, accompanied on the piano by Lorca himself. It was the great flamenco singer and dancer Pastora Imperio, daughter of the legendary Rosario ‘La Mejorana’, who suggested to Falla and María Martínez Sierra that they might write the music and libretto, respectively, of ‘El amor brujo’.

We experience the same thrilling confrontation with tradition here in these performances by two internationally famous Spanish artists: one a flamenco singer, the other a classical pianist. This album is the result of their first encounter!

‘These popular songs that I perform and sing are so ingrained in our tradition, and they have the same fascination for me, with my background in flamenco, that I imagine they must have had for Manuel Falla and Lorca when they composed the famous arrangements to give them body and soul…the project has benefited from the skill of Javier Perianes, master pianist and expert on Falla…These songs have been part of my repertoire for quite a while, but only now with the input from Perianes and Martín Sauer, have I developed my flamenco voice for more lyrical singing. La Argentinita was the muse who inspired me and first brought this project into being, and I have tried to weave my own shawl from the respect and the love that so defines and represents us.’ (Estrella Morente)
