Our Jazz subscription Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic is already celebrating its 10th anniversary this season. The program of the birthday season starts with a tribute to a key figure of European jazz who died early: the Polish pianist and composer Krzysztof Komeda. Since Joachim Kühn met Komeda at the famous Jazz Jamboree in Warsaw in 1965 and then accompanied him to the recording studio, he has been one of his admirers. Now he remembers this visionary solo, in a trio with Chris Jennings and Eric Schaefer, as well as with the Polish Atom String Quartet.
Three Fantastic women take center stage in December. Next up is the Icelandic pianist and singer Anna Gréta, who lives in Stockholm and continues the tradition of pop-oriented Nordic jazz in her own way. Then the Estonian singer Kadri Voorand, who comes from folk, who in a short time became the most prominent jazz musician in her country.
Under the title Veneziana, the Finnish pianist and famous jazz eclectician Iiro Rantala is dedicating himself to the great musical tradition of Venice with members of the Berliner Philharmoniker at the middle of the season. After that, one of the most important jazz projects on the heritage of our European musical folklore will be continued: the young Berlin saxophonist and composer Fabia Mantwill will perform Europeana II with her orchestra in a world premiere, which is based on a star-studded album of the same name from 1994. The grand finale belongs to Germany’s most popular jazz pianist Michael Wollny. The curious wanderer between styles devotes himself to the composer György Ligeti and meets the classical music colleague and proven Ligeti specialist Pierre-Laurent Aimard.
