The pianists Herbert Schuch and Gülru Ensari have been playing as duo only since 2014/2015 but no matter if four-handed or on two pianos, the German-Turkish duo has already convinced on numerous international concert stages, such as the BOZAR in Brussels or at the Antalya Piano Festival. After first recordings by major broadcasting institutions as the Austrian ORF, the duo is invited for the season 2016/17 to play at the MiTo Festival in Milano and Torino, with the Folkwang Kammerorchester in Essen, at the Kölner Philharmonie and in Salzburg.

This is their first CD recording together. It focuses on Stravinsky’s famous ballet music Le Sacre du Printemps, framed with works by Hindemith and Brahms. The CD also includes the world première recording of two Anatolian Songs by the Turkish composer Özkan Manav. The west-eastern program is a reflection of the private story of the German-Turkish couple who married in summer 2014 in Istanbul and have been living in Cologne for several years.

Everything began with Paul Hindemith’s Waltzes, op. 6. One morning, before practicing, Gülru Ensari and Herbert Schuch sight-read those eight miniatures for four hands, and were astounded to find that they featured a number of similarities with the Brahms Waltzes. Why not intermingle the two cycles? The Turkish-German duo – who are partners in real life, not just at the piano – decided to record the Brahms and Hindemith cycles for this CD release, along with two Turkish tunes by Özkan Manav and the four-hand version of Igor Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring”.
