In 1972, the Stooges were near the point of collapse when David Bowie’s management team, MainMan, took a chance on the band at Bowie’s behest. By this point, guitarist Ron Asheton and bassist Dave Alexander had been edged out of the picture, and James Williamson had signed on as Iggy’s new guitar mangler; Asheton rejoined the band shortly before recording commenced on Raw Power, but was forced to play second fiddle to Williamson as bassist. By most accounts, tensions were high during the recording of Raw Power, and the album sounds like the work of a band on its last legs — though rather than grinding to a halt, Iggy & the Stooges appeared ready to explode like an ammunition dump.

Music plays a crucial part in 2001: A Space Odyssey, and not only because of the relatively sparse dialogue. From very early on in production, Kubrick decided that he wanted the film to be a primarily non-verbal experience, one that did not rely on the traditional techniques of narrative cinema, and in which music would play a vital role in evoking particular moods. About half the music in the film appears either before the first line of dialogue or after the final line. Almost no music is heard during any scenes with dialogue.

David Sylvian is a brilliant rock & roll guitarist and vocalist. He is also a great electronic minimalist. Sadly, he tries hard to do both together. Gone to Earth has moments of brilliant instrumental ambience with deep samples and misplaced vocals. The instrumental virtuosity grabs listeners immediately. Sylvian surrounds himself with some of the greats — Bill Nelson, Robert Fripp, and Mel Collins among them. The sound is dynamic and gentle at the same time.

An early British fusion band, Atlantic Bridge put out a self-titled instrumental album in 1970. The skills of the players were impressive, and they didn’t compromise their jazz roots, with Jim Philip’s saxes and flute showing a decided John Coltrane influence. Chief arranger Mike McNaught’s electric keyboard provided the most rock-oriented flavour. Daryl Runswick also creates some interesting passages with bowed bass. Covers of “MacArthur Park” and the Beatles’ “Something” and “Dear Prudence” seemed emblematic of a desire to cross over to rock listeners, though it should be noted that it was far less common for a jazz-rock band to interpret such material in 1970 than it would be in the years to come. Al Stewart’s third album wasn’t much different from the territory he had claimed, with reasonable success, on his prior effort, Love Chronicles. Narrative tales of romance and experience, sometimes third-person and sometimes autobiographical, set the mood, complemented by mild folk-rock arrangements and Stewart’s warm yet bemused voice. A few placid folk guitar instrumentals break up the involved, lengthy vocal tracks. The best cut is “Electric Los Angeles Sunset,” which puts Stewart’s eye for locale-based storytelling to more forceful use than it had ever been previously heard, detailing the grim side of the city rather than its glamorous one. “Manuscript” was also an important work in its focus upon past history and its effects on various characters, an approach that would within a few years become prevalent in Stewart’s work. One of the unsung heroes of British blues, this one-man band was a fine harmonica player and singer, a decent guitarist, and a soulful enough singer to make one overlook his distinctly unbluesy high voice. The opening “Worried Mind” — just Duster on harp, guitar, voice, high-hat and kick drum — is a marvelously sloppy shuffle romp that holds its own with the Fabulous Thunderbirds’ work ten years hence. On other tracks Bennett is backed by three-fourths of the original Fleetwood Mac, who provide simple, effective support without stealing any limelight; solos are kept to a minimum. Originals “My Lucky Day” (with chromatic harmonica) and “Jumping at Shadows” which Mac would later cover) are absolutely outstanding, and Duster does justice to Magic Sam’s “My Love Is Your Love.”
