The Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin (RSB) is a Berlin orchestra rich in tradition. It goes back to the first musical radio hour Berlin broadcast on October 29, 1923 at 8 p.m. from the Vox-Haus and initially consisted only of the all-round musician Otto Urack, who sometimes played together with individual musicians. The orchestra did not acquire a symphonic lineup until the spring of 1925, and Mitteldeutsche Rundfunk AG (MIRAG) did not participate in the MDR Symphony Orchestra, which was nine months older, until October 17, 1924.

The orchestra’s symphonic repertoire includes music from all stylistic periods, from pre-classical to modern. One focus of the works played is 20th century music. In cooperation with Deutschlandradio, the orchestra is available in the studio for radio and CD recordings in addition to its numerous public concerts in Berlin and abroad. Between 2010 and 2013, the 200th anniversary of Richard Wagner’s birth, the RSB released concert performances of ten of Wagner’s major stage works at the Berlin Philharmonie with Marek Janowski, including the complete Ring cycle.

At the end of 2009, there was a brief plan to incorporate the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin into the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin at the beginning of the 2011/2012 season. Marek Janowski was to remain the orchestra’s principal conductor. However, due to strong opposition from politicians, members and the audience of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the plan was scrapped.
