The Kammerakademie Potsdam and its musical director Antonello Manacorda have received numerous awards for their complete recordings of the symphonies of Franz Schubert and Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. Their recording of the last three Mozart symphonies earned them an OPUS Klassik 2022 as “Orchestra of the Year.” Last year they began a new Beethoven cycle with Symphonies Nos. 1, 2 and 7, which they now continue with the pivotal Symphonies Nos. 5 & 6.
Critics attested to the first album “incredible anticipation and joie de vivre” (Stereoplay) as well as “inner logic and persuasiveness” (FONO FORUM).
The two symphonies, Nos. 5 and 6, were premiered together at the Theater an der Wien on December 22, 1808. The Fifth, with its concise opening motif, is widely regarded as one of the signature works of classical music in general. The Sixth, the so-called “Pastoral,” often described as complementary to the Fifth, relies on particular tonal impressions of nature in its five movements, with Beethoven himself writing as a motto above the symphony, “More expression of feeling than painting.”
“I try to grasp the essence of the music, not its effect. In this respect I see myself as an ‘unrhetorical’ interpreter: I do not so much want to emphasize and underline details specifically, I try rather to trust the matter and its proportions. It is not the image of a creator that I have in mind, but that of an archaeologist: With a fine brush, he clears the object of dust and carefully exposes it to make it visible in its completed form,” says Antonello Manacorda.
An Italian with a strong affinity for the German repertoire, he can be seen just as frequently in opera productions at the world’s most important opera houses in London, Munich or New York as he can on the podium of leading symphony orchestras, such as the Berlin Philharmonic (as he will again in May 2024), the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra or the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich.
