Continuing its exploration of Tudor Latin sacred music, ‘The Tudors At Prayer’ sees Magnificat perform music by Taverner, Tallis, Mundy, White and Byrd. The highlight is Mundy’s towering Vox Patris caelestis; immensely vivid and colourful this is a powerful performance to challenge any that has gone before. Equally enthralling as Magnificat’s critically acclaimed Spem in alium, but with even richer textures, Vox Patris caelestis perfectly demonstrates Magnificat’s heaven-sent sound.

Byrd’s heartfelt setting of Tribue, Domine plus a premiere recording of White’s Tota pulchra es, and his sublime psalm setting Domine, quis habitabit are further stand-out moments.

Since its creation in 1791, Mozart’s Requiem has become one of the truly iconic works in the history of music. For this recording of the work, Masaaki Suzuki and the Bach Collegium Japan commissioned a new performing edition. Masato Suzuki, himself a member of the BCJ and the son of Masaaki, has based his completion on Eybler’s and Süßmayr’s work, explaining his procedure in the liner notes to the disc. The recording was made at the Shoin Chapel in Kobe, where the team has previously recorded their complete cycle of Bach’s church cantatas. A stellar cast of soloists is headed by soprano Carolyn Sampson, who also shines in the famous soprano aria Laudate Dominum – one of the highlights of Vesperae solennes de confessore which conclude the disc. Unanimously recognized as one of the leading interpreters of Monteverdi, Rinaldo Alessandrini’s recordings of the Madrigals, the 1610Vespers, Orfeo, etc., have become standard references. In celebration of the thirtieth anniversary of his orchestras, Concerto Italiano, Rinaldo returns to his preferred composer creating, in the magnificent Basilica of Mantova, an imaginable Vespers service for San Marco assembled from various parts of the Selva Morale. In doing so he has found “the expressive logic which is at the heart of the liturgies for which this music was composed”…
This represents a first step in the recording of the Selva Morale, which will be completed in the coming years.

Following their award-winning recording of the Striggio 40-part Mass, I Fagiolini has returned with even more exquisite baroque music from the extraordinary year of 1612. The centerpiece is the crowning glory of the late Renaissance – Gabrieli’s Magnificat for a massive seven choirs – a work never before recorded as the music for five of the choirs has been lost. Conductor Robert Hollingworth and Renaissance scholar Hugh Keyte have taken the enormous task of reconstructing parts for the missing choirs. The album presents the best works of the greatest composers of the time in the form of a service of Vespers. (more…)
